2.8 / 3.1 engine dimensions

Hey Guys,

New guy here. I read the FAQ and searched the forum before I decided to join the forum, but couldn't find the answer. I also Googled for over an hour and didn't find it either. What I'm looking for is the length from the transmission mounting surface to the water pump pulley and also the width between the valve covers. Something like in the below 4.3L graphic.

The reason why I'm after this information is I'm planning to swap a 2.8L or 3.1L into my Suzuki Samurai trail rig and need to know if it will fit. The original 1.3L I4 only makes 68HP and is getting tired so its time to do something. I'd love to add some good ol American horse power to this little beast. Thanks guys.

Re: 2.8 / 3.1 engine dimensions

Okay, after joining 4 more forums and searching them too, I found these. They are only the dimensions of the block, but that's better than nothing. Can any of you guys take a quick measurement of how far the water pump pulley sticks out from the block? I only have about 23 inches of length to work with in the Samurai. I need to make sure it has a reasonable chance of fitting before I commit to this engine swap. Thanks in advance!

From the second graphic I posted, it looks like the raw block for the 2.8 / 3.1 is about 17 and 1/8" long. I can get more room than 23 inches if I move the transmission and transfer case back, but I shooting for equal length front and rear drive shafts.

I measured a fiero waterpump and it is about 5 1/4" from where the timing cover fits to the block to the end of the waterpump shaft. The updated aluminum head 60*v6 introduced on '87 transverse engines(besides fiero) mount the water pump off to the side and use a serpentine belt to drive it-it is quite a bit shorter than the earlier version.

Did you get the swap done I'm thinking of the same swap in my 1988.5 Samurai?
