85 IROC-Z Tach too high

My speedometer reads 60 mph and the tach reads 4500 rpm.

Started out reading 60/30. Then 60/35. Just keeps getting higher.

The engine does not feel any faster at all. Please give advice?

Do I need to replace tach and if so where to buy?

Re: 85 IROC-Z Tach too high

There is a sticky on the Electronics board here that covers bad tach's. IIRC, the title is for the newer ones, but it may apply to your '85. If so it is an easy fix.

RBob.

I'd swap tachs, it fixed mine. Ebay

Re: 85 IROC-Z Tach too high

Getting hard to find good ones that way...

I have a whole HEEEEP of em. EVERY ONE reads high. One of em reads almost 3 times reality. The one in my car reads the least high; only about 3%.

Take RBob's advice on this one.

Re: 85 IROC-Z Tach too high

There are repair services available, but they are pricey. I sell refurbished tachs for $45. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks, Greg

Re: 85 IROC-Z Tach too high

I just got 2 5500 redline tachs in. One has a 60 psi oil gauge and the other has an 80 psi oil gauge. Either one is $45 shipped, just let me know which one you want.

thanks, Greg

Re: 85 IROC-Z Tach too high

There is a thread on repair. It's very straight forward if you are proficient at that type of work. I did mine and it seems to be working correctly.

Make sure you find the thread that covers 89 & earlier tachs. Not the 90+ thread.
