Fuel Problem When Hot

I have a 1989 GTA All Stack as far as I Know. I took it for a ride Yesterday, because of trafic the temp went up to a litter over 220. the fuel pump start to make a sound like it was bean overworked. Started to missfire very bad to the poit that it shut down. I manage to get home puting it on first gear. I let it sit for aprox 3 hours when I started it up it was fine and strong does any body have any Idea why this happen?

I also Have a 1985 T/A that had that same noise coming from the pump I change the pump but the sound still their so By these experience I'm discarting for the time bean the pump, also the cover from the Weel where the fuel tank fill is missing from my 89 GTA so It's an indication that somebody mess with the fuel tank maybe to replece the fuel pump and that is another reason why I'm not incline to think that the fuel pump is bad.

I haven't make any diagnose of this but will be performing a fuel presure test soon.

It is the first time it died on me but ever since I bought it the fuel pump make this Hising sound.

I just found a tread with this problem and aparently their is some line with dirt on them so I'll start by replacing the Fuel Filter and see how bad is it and then keep cleaning as I se fit.

Re: Fuel Problem When Hot

I just replace the fuel filter and it was with some restriction. I blow true both and the Old filter had aprox half the flow than the new one. After that I started the car and let it sit till the temp gage was close to 220 and didn't die or loose power like before, but the fuel pump still have the haising sound. (I call it That the car is criyng) so I hooke up a fuel presure gage and with Key on go to 40 but when the pump stop quickly comes down to 0 and sometimes when i put the key on it just go up to 20.

With the car running in Idle de nidle jumps from 35 to 40 and at WOT go up to 50 but with the jumping neadle. so I decided that the fule presure regulator need to be change so I sent for one on ebay. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/110846096637...84.m1439.l2649)

The vid of the fuel gage:

so as soon as the regulator get to me will install it.

Today I receive my new presure regulator but it doesn't have the spring. Does it comes this way or it is a mistake? I guest I'm goin to buy a new original one to put the spring on it.

Doesn't look good for your fuel pump. Hopefully the regulator fixes it, but I've pressure tested many a thirdgen, and they all seem to be between 40 and 45 lbs of pressure with the key on. Yours is half of that

Re: Fuel Problem When Hot

Update:

I just receive the diaphragm / Spring and a'm ready to replace it this next weekend. I'll probably clean the fuel injectors since I've to remove all the top end.

Any advice on what sould I do since I'm desasembly the plenum? other than replacing the regulator and cleanning the injectors?

Last weekend I took the GTA for a Trip to take my son to a birthday party. I notice that when I got the Gas pedal like 1/3 in the car tend to bugdown like if it wouldn't have fuel. If I stay before that point or pass that point it work fine. In my trip back I took it to 100Mph no problem I'm thinking one of two:

1. The TPS is bad
2. Dip Stick Tube Not In place

When I recive the car the dipstick that goes to the Engine Oil Pan felt off and havent put the new back in and the air getting to the crank case maybe towing something off.

What do you think?

Re: Fuel Problem When Hot

I had that SAME exact sound coming from my junk Airtex pump. Same driving issues as well. When it got hot and I was around half a tank forget about it. It'd die on me in the worst areas. I have since replaced my fuel pump with a AC Delco and have not had the problem come back since. That fuel pressure is way off and that whine tells all. I had the problem for about a year and couldn't figure it out. Also make sure your heat shields are in place in the rear. One right under the gas tank and also one where the exhaust goes over the axle.

I have the same problem. I'm gonna do what buddy said and put the ac delco pump in and hope that fixes it. It always pops up at the worst times. Put more gas in an its good to go but very aggervating.

Re: Fuel Problem When Hot

Hi it's bean a while since my last update in this matter. Haven't done anything yet to fix this but desided to replace the fuel pump with the regulator at the same time and clean the fuel lines in the process. the question this time is what pump to buy?

I'm between this:

1. ACDELCO Part # EP241 = $61.89
2. BOSCH Part # 69218 = $63.79
3. DENSO Part # 9515014 = $65.79
4. CARTER Part # P74209HP = $131.79

I was impress by the document that the Carter people put together about why this pumps fails.

I'm willing to pay the carter price just need to know from the experts (all you guys) that it is worth it.

Re: Fuel Problem When Hot

Well here we are about 5 months later and my AC Delco has been excellent. In FL have seen hotter temps and where it'd usually leave me stranded, the car didn't even hesitate. Even below a quarter tank, had drove many miles didn't have any problems. I say go with what others have used for sure. I got my pump off eBay for really cheap from a seller with good feedback.

Re: Fuel Problem When Hot

Hi I'ts been a while and decided to go with the carter Pump:

Today I put up the tank with the new pump Inside. but before I whanted to check the fuel lines so I put some compress air true them and the main an return where OK but when I blow true the emission line I heard a Pop and when I investigate their is a kind of check valve that brake open because the pressure I apply. I mount the valve again and it take a lot of presure to open it so I'm wondering if this is the cause that the tank overheat and overpresurize the Fuel Gas.

Taking a coser look at the diaphragm it looks like a fabric with litter holes in it and fragment of rubber so I belive this is the cause for the block of the fumes to the canaster because the rubber part is gone can't seal properly so I believe the new one will solve this problem.

Re: Fuel Problem When Hot

Check Valve Before Canaster Opend the diaphragm is missing it rubber part so it can't seal so the tank fume pressure can't open it a new valve will solve the issue
