First of all I have a 1991 camaro with the 3.1L v6. Yesterday I was letting it warm up to get some heat before I went out. When it was warming it up it just shut off. I went to go restart it and it would crank but not start. I checked to make sure the fuel pump was kicking on and it was. It's not out of gas because I had just fueled up. Any help or suggestions?

 

Check to see whether you have spark coming out of the distributor. When my V6 3.1 did this it was my ignition control module. You can get it checked at Autozone. Do a search on icm. Good luck.

Inside the distributor under the rotor. Looks kinda like this

 

I replaced the ICM and noticed the rotor was cracked so i replaced the cap and rotor..... still no start. Any other ideas?

 

If it tries to run with starter fluid or a little gas manually poured into the manifold, it's not an ignition issue. Try that.

its getting gas because when i crank it I can smell it....... its got to be spark then right?

 

Have you checked for spark? Or did you skip that step and just start blindly replacing parts??

 

yeah I checked and I'm not getting spark even after replacing the ICM

 

If you have spark, good, strong spark, and fuel then it should start. The 3.1L has multiport fuel injection right? Have you checked fuel pressure at the fuel rails?

I checked and have no spark but how do you check the fuel rails?

 

My mistake, I miss read your post about getting spark. If you don't have spark after changing the ICM check the coil & check the power to the coil.

 

It was the ignition coil...... thanks alot guys now I've had another problem as well.... when i start the car i have to keep a foot on the gas to keep the RPM's up or it dies. It does this for like the first 10 minutes of driving and then I dont have to do it anymore any suggestions?
