Random no start (I searched already)
Ok, so i hunted through a bunch of threads here but still haven't come up with a definitive solution.
I have an 87 GTA, (no vats) and all of a sudden she is having random no start issues. Doesn't matter cold or hot. She has done it three times in a row, and then not for a week, completely random. And I can turn the key all the way, fuel pump comes on, lights everything just no crank, doesn't even try. She will, however, bomb start every time.
I have my neutral safety switch bypassed so I know that is not the issue, since I drove her for 2 years with it like that.
Only thing that has been done lately is a new ignition cylinder was installed because it stopped turning to the crank position. But she ran for almost 8 months no issues? This just recently popped up as an issue.
Anyone else had anything similar? that didn't end up being the neutral safety?
Thanks Guys
Chelsea

When you say neutral safety switch, do you mean the switch that is engaged when you press the clutch to start it? (your sig says it's a 5 speed so I'm assuming that's what you mean).
If so I would advise you to check the bypass you put in, make sure all the wires are still good. I had that switch bypassed on a 5-speed cavalier for a while but it still went bad and needed some attention at one point.

Next time it does it, have your assistant turn the key to start and hold it, while you get underneath the car and whap the starter with a tire tool or something.
If it starts when you hit it, you need a starter.
It'll do nothing but get worse as long as that starter is in there, if it has that problem.

I really hope someone knows what the heck the problem is! lol I tried putting in a new starter today and I tried to crank it up when I was all finished and bam! all I heard was the fuel pump turn on and no engaging of the starter. What a waste of time and $$ that was. Then I let it sit for about 5 minutes ... went to try again and it cranked right up. Just about every time I go to crank up the car it'll do this. So it's only going to get worse , it'll eventually do this every time you go to turn the key. SOMEONE HELP! ha

It is a very simple circuit
see

so get the DVM out and find where you are loosing power to the solenoid
Start by checking for power on the purple wire at the solenoid.
If you have power there in the START position then the starter is suspect as Sofa suggested
If no power check yellow wire out of the Ign switch
