Re: timming question

A typical idle (when in drive) would be somewhere between 650 and 750 I believe. I have my 350 set up to idle at about 675 in drive.

Is it staying in fast idle after warming up or something?

I would be more willing to bet you need to replace the TBI base gasket.

A vacuum leak could be possible so PO raised the idle speed to compensate.

best thing to do is rule out any vacuum leaks, make sure the IAC motor is OK, then reset the idle speed
to specs.

of course you can check base timing... unplug the tan wire from the dist. and then set base timing to "0" or you can set it advanced a couple of degrees.

Re: timing question

I had to buy a Innova digital timing gun # 3568 with RPM display to properly set timing and min. idle speed using the correct IAC motor reset procedure to finally get it right.

I found mine on line for $65.00
I already have the standard timing light but is worthless compared to the upgrade.

Re: timing question

What I mentioned above is the procedure.
The digital timing gun allows you to adjust exactly to "0"*stock timing setting and then go through the IACV reset and then adjust the min. idle speed .

You can’t adjust something you can’t see like the RPMs. That's why I bought the new timing gun.

Not only is it more accurate when setting your timing but shows exactly where the rpm are.=

Re: timing question

The previous owner could have advanced the base timing a little. As you turn the distributor advancing the base timing the RPMs will increase. If that's the case all you have to do is back it down to the stock setting of "0"
Is there a reason you want to reset the IACV ?

There is a thread concerning setting timing but I cant seem to find it.
