Help please...Harness mess!
Hi All,
Some of you may have seen in another thread im having real issues sorting the engine bay wiring in my '87 IROC L98 350. The PO has made a real mess of trying to repair a small engine bay fire and then given up half way through.
To make things worse he has removed some of the engine ancillaries. I cannot work out what I have and what is missing.
I know he has taken out the AC but i'm not sure what else is missing......I have ordered the Helm manuals to try and figure it out but they wont be here for a week or so.
I am not helped by the fact I am living in the UK and have no access to a GM dealer and as we never had Camaro's over here no autoparts stores hold any data on them.
Several people have provided some info and for that I am really gratefull. I have now pulled the motor and had a good look at the looms. I think they are repairable but I have no reference material to complare them, too.
If anyone is able to review the pictures I have taken and help me out it would be a great help:
This is the 1st loom that was in situ:
Engine/ECM harness:

1:Can anyone help with these:

2: Where does the this white plug attach?

TBC.............

........cont.....
9. Not really sure about this whole end....again not connected to anything? Looks in pretty bad shape?

10. This is the other part of the loom that was still attached to the car via the split connector block with the screw in it.

11. One side of it looks butchered again......does anyone know what the bare wires are for?

14. These 2 pieces were just laying loose in the engine bay.
Any idea what this leg is?

15. I think this is another piece of a light loom?? Although its the only piece I can find with horn connectors? Is it duplicated on my more complete light loom in number 13?

Re: Help please...Harness mess!
That is all the wiring that was present forward of the firewall........Is there anything glaringly obvious missing??
Thanks for anyone taking the time to study the pictures and help me out? This is a real mess and I'd love to try and sort it but being so far away from the states I have to rely on help from here or pay millions of dollars for it.

If you clean the wires at each "mystery connector" with alcohol or lacquer thinner the wire colours may become more apparent (the photos don't show them clearly enough to definitely identify).
Armed with the colours and the number of connections in each plug/receptacle, the odds of positive identification are much greater. I can send full 1987 diagrams if that would be helpful.

Re: Help please...Harness mess!
Hi Kyle,
I don't know tham all, but will help get the ball rolling:
1:
Top - Looks like Oil Pressure guage wire, (Should be TAN wire )
Bottom looks like EGR relay plug
2: Auto Tranny
3: Connects to 2 wire plug on ENGINE harness. ( oil pressure and ?? )
4: Carbon Canister
5: Coil to Distributor. Yup, it's ugly ( ,... but it should work )
6: --------
7: SMOG pump relays
8:
Bottom = AC compressor,
Top should NOT be plugged in together, I THINK that both of them lead to the battery cable.
9: Duel fans , relay ( hacked )
10: ENGINE harness
11:
Looks like spliced wire on Left is Ground
Top look like AC and possibly O2 sensor wire and temp gauge wire.
Yes; Right side = Wipers
Bottom right = 2 wire connector on ECM harness ( mentioned earlier )
* not sure about small 2 wire connetor in the middle.
12:
VERY top = coil
Top Left = Heater harness connection
Bottom = Alternator
Right = Starter
13:
Top = Headlights
Middle = fog light harness connector
Bottom right - Brake warning
14: combination; fog light harness and cruise control harness
15: hacked duplicate light harness. Use this to trace where your horn wire should be on the "full" light harness.
I can't be 100% sure,... but I know that many/most I've Identified are accurate. At least that should be enough info to get you started !!

Re: Help please...Harness mess!
You guys are awesome, thanks for the help. Definately a great start.
Vader: I will give the wire cleaning a try - thanks. Cant believe I didnt think of it myself. Something so simple lol. Would you mind sending me the 87 wiring info? It would be a massive help. I have ordered some of the manuals but shipping from the states takes weeks and i'm quite anxious to get going while we have a spell of good weather over here this week?
My e-mail is: kes1907@yahoo.com
John: Thanks buddy. You've been a great help. I can finally get started putting my puzzle back together and repairing what I have.
Rusty: LOL yes you are right, its like trying to solve a puzzle without any instructions or guidance picture..... I have already ordered the original GM 1987 Camaro Shop Manual and Electrical Supplements. I think they are repos of the Helm Inc. ones GM sent to the dealerships. They are coming on a CD rather than hard copy as international shipping cost for 5lb books was ridiculous. As I said to Vader, problem is things take weeks when shipped internationally by USPS and I am keen to get going. I've no doubt though that these will be worth their weight in gold when they do arrive.
Thanks again all for taking the time to look at these pictures and help.....really do apreciate it
