K&N filter vs. Stock intake?

What's the advantage of a K&N over the stock intake? My 92 Forumla L98 had a K&N on it from the PO. The square intake tube and bracket were laying in the back of the car, but the original canister for the air filter is missing. I'm content to stay with the K&N, but wondered what the advantage was. Here's a pic of my engine showing the filter--if that helps.

Re: K&N filter vs. Stock intake?

BTW, don't you have to take the MAF sensor off to use this kind of K&N?

92's are speed density cars not MAF cars. They use a MAP sensor instead.
That setup is actually gonna hurt more then help. With the filter located that way you will be sucking in hot air coming off the radiator. I would recommend setting up a custom cold air setup. Do a search a lot of guys have made their own cold air intakes.

Re: K&N filter vs. Stock intake?

Ok. Thx. I was afraid of that. I may put the stock intake back on, and do a cold air setup later on.

Filter looks pretty dirty also, they sell cleaning kits at AP stores.

K&Ns supposedly allow more free air to flow, the oil in the kits traps dust and dirt, but also that set up is prone to get belt dust.

Yeah. It was. That pic was taken by the dealership in the ad where I bought it from. I've since cleaned it with the kit, but to be honest, it didn't look terribly different after I cleaned it. I mean, a lot of crap came out of there, but I still think it looks crappy. I'll probably just take it off and go stock for a while. I've never understood how putting a filter choked with oil makes the air flow better, but I am just a boy.......lol

Re: K&N filter vs. Stock intake?

If your stock intake looks like this than it is already one of the best "fresh air" intakes there is.

No, that's not it. It's the square tube that runs off to the passenger's side into a round canister below the coolant overflow tank. My battery is on the other side below the windshield washer fluid tank. The canister is missing, but there is an air filter that looks like it came off an after market cold air device that may attach to the end of the tube opposite from the throttle body. In other words, it's a half a&& part of each that needs to be dealt with. A guy on another thread just told me 92's use MAF, but I'm told here they use map, and I see a map sensor on my plenum. This is not confusing at all..........Although in the pic you are showing, I do not see a map sensor where mine is, and you may have a MAF in that intake. My map is on the passenger's side of the plenum in that notch right before the distributor cover flares out.

That intake is for Camaro's only. It will not clear the Firebird hood. The birds had a tube running over to behind the headlight pocket area.
And Again your car is MAP not MAF all 92's are MAP cars period.
1990-92 cars are all Speed Density cars using MAP sensors. 89 and older use MAF

Re: K&N filter vs. Stock intake?

Heres a good shot of my bird intake w/ a MAF, you could do something like the with the after market air intake kits on ebay, put the filter off to the side - extend the hose where the MAF was ...

Re: K&N filter vs. Stock intake?

Yeah, that's actually similar to the stock setup that was left in the back of the car. It has the stock tube and tb attachment, but instead of the stock canister there's a cold air type filter that plugs into the end of the stock airtube. Cold air intakes on eBay run in the $50 range, so it's not a bad investment. I do run MAP though, not MAF, I finally figured that out when I started googling things. I found my MAP sensor on the intake, but my egr is bad now. Gotta replace that.......

Re: K&N filter vs. Stock intake?

Sorry about that. Im a Camaro guy and did not know.
Still one of IMO the best air intakes I've ever seen.
