check engine

I have. 1988 irocz and when I am driving down the road and go past 100km/h the check engine light comes on. Ive tooken it to the gm dealership and they say they cant find anything but my catalytic converter or whatnot is worn. Would that make that happen? Help going crazy trying to solve it.

Re: check engine

What codes?

Ive tooken it to the gm dealership
Complete total utter futile waste of time.

Your car is LITERALLY an ANTIQUE in most states of the US. GM dealers are a STORE, in the business of selling NEW cars; not restoring antiques. Sux I know, but that's just how it is. Don't waste your money on em.

Re: check engine

Sofas point is that if you have any good local mechanics they will probably know more than the dealership about these cars. They will certainly have a better outlook on fixing it. Dealerships usually only know how to throw parts at a problem. Any diagnostic mechanic can pull the codes.

Re: check engine

C'mon d00d, don't make excuses for em, they're USELESS for cars this old. Go sit in the break room with the techs and listen to em swear at the 4-yr-old "relics" they can't believe people are still driving. To them, anything older than 5 yrs shouldn't even be on the road. That's just the way it is, like it or not. (speaking strictly as someone with 2 brothers who have been service mgrs. and a 3rd a tech, at multiple dealerships, GM and other)

It's an ANTIQUE. Ya gotta learn how to work on it yourself. Fortunately, you've come to the right place: there's more info about these cars available here, than in ANY GM dealership that maintains (throws away the old ones) their books.

You don't need a "mechanic" or a "reader" to pull the codes. All you need is a paper clip. Read the tech articles on the home page of this site; you'll then know ALOT more about these cars than probably any GM tech at any dealership... for FREE.
