1983 Firebird & the cruise doesn't work (cable style)... where to start?
Title says it all!
My 83 Firebird V8 has the weird cable-driven cruise control which seems to do nothing.
Wondering where to start?
Is the system fully mechanical?
Any good threads already on it?
Lastly, was the V8 system the same for the 82-84 cars?
Thanks guys!

It needs a regulator.
Start by replacing it. It wears out in a non-repairable manner. (you'll see if you open it up... it will be full of copper dust from the spinning disc thing rubbing)
Yes it is mechanical.
Can't say about your threads; if you haven't stripped any of them, they're probably good.
Yes it is the same for all motors, except that its time constants and other parameters are set differently for different motors. If you put a V8 one on a 6-cyl, it will be expecting a certain amount of throttle opening to have a particular amount of effect, which of course it won't; so it will always be very confused and probably will let the vehicle speed drop way too much before compensating, and probably will not be able to actually hold a constant speed over varying terrain. But it will at least "work".

Gotcha!
Is it this do-dad?
Oh, and on the threads, I meant other postings on the same issue. Didn't want to start another if there was one with all the answers already!
