what kind of engine?

Ok I'm thinking about getting a new engine in my 1989 iroc z camaro with a 305 tpi should be stock. Because it's just not what I was looking for hp wise, how do I find out if it is a crate engine?

I'm not sure what your asking? Sounds like you want to know if the 305 in your iroc was replaced with a crate engine.

Re: what kind of engine?

Easiest way to find out if it's original or not is to check the casting numbers. If casting numbers match the year range and model of the car then check the suffix number. If the number has been machined off then the block has been decked. If the number doesn't match any know VIN or suffix numbers then it's probably a rebuild with custom stamping that only means something to the machine shop that did the work.

If the partial VIN on the block by the suffix number matches the last digits of the VIN of the car then it's the original engine.

I guess what I'm really asking is if I swap the engine in my and let's say it's a crate engine does it matter if I put in another crate engine? Or would it hurt if I don't?

Re: what kind of engine?

All a crate motor is, is a block thats been clean inspected and machined ready to install. So, you can install a crate motor, or a junk yard motor, or buy a new motor from GM. It doesn't matter, just do not install a Ford motor in a GM car, that's against TGO's law's.

Re: what kind of engine?

Taking out an engine and putting in a new one does not hurt the old engine.
