89 IROC cranks but won't start

Hi everyone, I'm new here. Just received an 89 IROC-Z 5.7 TPI last week with some issues. Mainly won't start. Cranks good, actually started up once which amazed me, but never again without the help of starter fluid. Checked with a Noid light and ICM seems good. Haven't verified the fuel pressure yet but was told by previous owner that it's good (no specified value given) Will get around to checking myself on Sunday time permitting. Did ohm check the injectors, all around 15-16 ohms with the exception of one at 10 ohms. Left it unplugged and cranked the engine on the last bit of battery power (on battery charger at the moment) but engine still didn't start. Pump relay is also energizing. Also found this cable laying loose in the engine bay. It's obviously a power cable with a fusible link and a cutout switch wired inline. No idea what it's for. Runs down under A/C housing. Any constructive advice would be greatly appreciated.

Does it stay running with starting fluid?

no, it only runs for several seconds then dies once the starter fluid is burned up.

I am working on an 89 GTA L98 that starts and runs but won't restart when you turn it off and try to start it again. Fuel pressure bleeds off pressure quickly. Check your pressure and check for good spark at the plugs. May be regulator or weak fuel pump on your car. The loose lead you showed is Main power for an amplifier for a speaker system. Should not affect the engine.

Re: 89 IROC cranks but won't start

Thanks LT1Formula! Went to the garage this morning and decided to try it after a full charge on the battery. Started up on second try... Let it run for a minute then shut it off. Decided to try it again and it started a second time in a row. That's a first! Also this was with the #2 injector wire pulled (#2 injector only reading 10 ohms). Thought I had found the problem. Plugged #2 in and cranked it, wouldn't start! Just to verify, unplugged #2 injector cable and still wouldn't start... back to square one
Will check the fuel pressure tomorrow.

you need a set of injectors ."south bay" is well recommended .many members on here have used their injectors with excellent results.10 ohms on that one aint gonna fly. I would rebuild the fuel pressure regulator while I had it that far apart also. could be all that you need to do . in any case it will go a long way twards fixing your issues.

Thanks Rusty Vango, I will be doing that soon. Just need to get the time to work on it.
