Starts up like its WOT
I have seen a lot of post about putting LED's in the instrument cluster and decided to do so. I replaced every (194) in my dash. Looked good, worked good. So I start the car to head home and as soon as it turns over the car runs at full throttle. First I thought I had the rug caught on the accelerator from working under there. But nope, that's not the case. It was running perfect before I installed the lights. Any suggestions???? 92 Z28 305TPI Manual Trans.
Also, I dont know if this has anything to do with it or if it is just coincidence, but I turned it on and off 3 or 4 times and now my key is stuck in the ignition. Luckily after it revs wide open it will drop to about 3500 and I had to pull the cable off the battery to shut off the car. Pretty sure a tumbler is stuck in the ignition but maybe it is tied into why it starts wide open and then runs at a very high idle. Any suggestions please help.

Have you check to make sure the throttle isnt stuck open partially?

I have not pulled off the ducting to the throttle body but I did grab the throttle linkage and every thing seems to be moving free.

Check the idle control valve or whatever the idle system is on your engine and check for vacuum leaks.

Will do. When I changed the lights in the cluster I also changed the bulb for the shift light. That wouldn't do anything with the computer would it. Or what if my Tach wasn't making a good contact, could that cause the IAC motor to run wide open? Not really familiar with the electronics on these cars. Just odd how everything was fine an hour before I changed the lights. Put it back together and now its doing this.

sounds like something is touching something else that it shouldnt.
Have you opened up the dash again and make sure there are no loose wires running around shorting things out?

Re: Starts up like its WOT
Im not ruling it out, but an engine cannot run at more RPMs than it should without more air entering the engine. I dont see how anything you can do in the dash will cause more air to enter the engine. You've got a vacuum leak, your throttle blade is stuck open, or your idle circuit is fubar'd. Just the computer dumping more fuel in will not have this effect, and as far as I can tell there is nothing the computer CAN do to cause the RPMs to increase that much without a mechanical issue. I cant rule it out, since things can interact in odd ways, but based on your description Im attributing it to coincidence.

So I figured out a wire poped out the cruse control plug and shorted so thats why it was running WOT. For the few people who took the time to give me suggestions sincerely thank you!!!!! To everyone else who must be to busy helping people with problems like changing a head light or how to swap a shifter **** thanks for being useless to this site.

Your situation was unique, where activity in one area caused a problem somewhere else, that should have been unrelated.
A few people (InfernalVortex) responded (3 times) with troubleshooting steps that would solve 99% of problems, which turned out to not be the root cause in your situation. But, with the cruise control opening the throttle, it WAS the indirect cause which helped you find the problem.
Everyone else saw that you got a 99% suggestion and didn't bother to post "heck, I don't know what else it could be." And the solution was for you to troubleshoot your own situation, to find out what you did wrong. (Not a dig. Everyone makes mistakes.)
Besides, it is summer time, people are out playing with their cars, too. And not everyone scans the Tech/General forum.
A lot of valid reasons why a lot of the members did not respond.
Throwing an insult out at everyone else is not a way to earn their respect and make them want to help you next time you post.
Glad you found the problem!

I try to help where I can, but even as an electronics engineer I couldn't find any possibility of changing lights having anything to do with your issue. Though I would have said vacuum leak or binding on linkages to the TB, but Infernal beat me to it.
We don't get paid to do this, we do it as a community, and sometimes people just don't have an answer because they either are learning about these cars, or they just don't know the answer.
Insults don't get anything accomplished, and just make you look bad and lessen the chance that you will get help with future issues.
Give respect, get respect.
