Can loose gas cap cause engine problem?

88 Iroc-Z with 383, tpi.
Runs rough at low idle. Often kills.
But then runs fine for days
Someone suggested gas cap may be loose or defective.
???

No. Later cars will throw a check engine light if the cap is loose, but 3rd gens have no such monitoring system.
