No start without stating fluid then runs great
No start without stating fluid then runs great
I have a 1985 TPI 305 running speed density swapped into 89 Wrangler with an intermittent issue, will crankover and randomly not start. Spray with starter fluid and she starts and continues to run. All will be well for days, and then the issue reoccurs. There seems to be no logic as to when it will start or not start.
I purchased the Wrangler withthe swap completed. The PO drove it for 10 years then experienced a no start due to a PROM issue. I replaced the prom and a VATS by pass, ran great and then the crank and no start issue developed.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you,

Do you hear the fuel pump come on for a few seconds when you 1st turn the key on?If the fuel pump relay is bad,it won't prime the injectors. It should come on tho once the engine sees oil psi from turning over.

Update, since posting this message it starts every time. Next time I get a no start I'll check the fuel pressure with a gauge.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Re: No start without stating fluid then runs great
I had the very same issue with my 89 camaro with 305 tbi would start first thing in the morning and if you cut it off and then try to restart it would not start but spray starter fluid it would go. I thought it may be the pump so i changed it and still had same issue then i change the fuel pump relay and problem went away. Change the fuel pump relay and that should fix your problem

Update. Damn thing would not start this morning. Have a gauge on on the fuel rail. As soon as the key is turn on I hve 45 lbs of fuel pressure. Seems that should rule out the relay.
Plan on looking into it further this weekend. I know it needs a signal from the dizzy and a signal from the oil pressure sending unit in order to start. What other signal to the ECM is required in order to get a start?
Thanks for all your help.
