HELP: exhausts gas smell in cabin

Hi

Some days ago I drove the GTA im about to buy, and I founded out that it has a very bothersome problem. When you floor it, immediatly a smell of gas enters the cabin.
This is a unacceptable pre-WW1 proletarian car disgusting problem

Mechanic (who is great but unskilled in USA cars) said he is confident about fixing it in less that one/two hours. But I would like to be sure about this fix, so I'm asking you guys some suggestion about the reason.

What could it be? How to solve?

Thank you very, very much

Re: HELP: exhausts gas smell in cabin

from past experience I have found that if the seal on the rear of the hood is missing fumes can enter car . HVAC air is picked up at base of windshield under windshield wipers . if rubber seal is missing fumes enter cabin . good luck .

Is the EVAP system intact? I bet it isn't.

Unburnt (raw)or burnt fuel smell? Interesting........
loose fuel line/rail. FPR diaphram broke pushing fuel out the vacuum hose upon hard acceleration.
Did you rev the engine while looking for raw fuel leaks under the hood?

Agree with UNCLE TOM and Stealth.

Re: HELP: exhausts gas smell in cabin

My car had a real bad gas smell after a long trip, and it turned out that someone had put the EVAP line from the tank on the AIR inlet for the canister, and the fitting that the tank was supposed to go to was just open air when the purge valve opened.

Re: HELP: exhausts gas smell in cabin

Also, HVAC box on firewall is made of plastic and is very close to right exhaust manifold. It becomes brittle with heat and age, which may eventually lead to a hole in the box. Check to be sure.

Re: HELP: exhausts gas smell in cabin

Thank you all guys

I'll have the mechanic check the seals on the base of the windshield!
Also we'll check the HVAC box, as eseibel67 said.

Hope to solve the problem, even if actually it is not so evident as I thought originally. But it is to be fixed anyway.

Someone972, hard for me to understand what you've said

thanks,

-nig

Re: HELP: exhausts gas smell in cabin

Sorry, sometimes I forget that not everyone has the same level of technical knowledge. Since I don't know your level in particular I'll just explain it fairly basically. For emissions reasons, our cars have what are known as a charcoal canister located under the hood. It looks like a black cylinder 6-8 inches tall. The purpose of this device is to take excess vapors from the tank caused by positive tank pressure (such as when it heats up), and store them instead of releasing them into the atmosphere. The vapors are later allowed to flow from the canister to the engine for burning. These canisters have three nubs for tubes to attach. One is for the line to the engine, one is for the line coming from the gas tank, and the last is for air to flow into the canister (which sometimes has a tube attached, sometimes just goes to open air). In my case, the line coming from the tank was attached to the wrong nub, causing the vapor to escape under the hood and causing a strong gas smell. The nub for air inlet should be labeled AIR and the one for the tank should be TANK, or something similar, so it's easy to check.

Re: HELP: exhausts gas smell in cabin

972 , your explanation was good . but please remember the OP's 1st language is not English . much can be lost in translation . .............. NiG the seal I mentioned is at the rear of the hood itself . not at the base of the windshield . it does mate with the body at the base of the windshield . good luck .

Re: HELP: exhausts gas smell in cabin

Thank you guys, and sorry for answering with such a terrible delay.

Now I got what you said, 972, very usefull. Tomorrow I have plans to take the car to the mechanic. I'll ask him to check the charcoal canister, hoping he will be able to locate it.

I have to say that recently the "gas cabin" issue haven't shown up anymore. Not noticeably at least. Very strange.
It seems like it never appears while running, but it can apper when you start the car.
Weird :/

THANKS!!!
