i dont know if im posting this in the right section, but my firebird has been at my parents house for a few months now and its time to bring it home. Where I live a car must be registered to park here, but the car isnt done yet, i live in texas, near dallas, does anyone in this area know if i can register my vehicle before i get an inspection? its obviously not going to pass inspection reight now but i want to have it registered so i can bring it home and get it running then get it inspected. anyone?

 

Do you have a garage or driveway to park it in? They shouldn't make you register it until you are "actually" driving it. Do you plan on driving it home or trailering it?

 

no garage and yes i have my own driveway but any vehicle parked must be registered. and im just going to pull her home, i dont expect it to be driveable yet.

 

I wouldn't worry about registering it yet just get it home first. You can explain why its not registered easily enough to keep the cops off ya. Or is this a home owners association thing?

 

Do you have the title to the car? You need the title in your name first. Most places in Texas, vehicle registration is handled by the county tax assessors office. That may be changing this March when they combine the the state inspection and registration sticker into 1 sticker and 1 payment. Call the county tax assessors office and ask them about it, I would do it ASAP. After March, it could be a problem getting the car registered without inspection (and insurance).

 

unfortunately it has to be registered or it will get towed. Just hoping I can get it registered without inspection, then I will be able to finish it. My plan is to drop new engine in at my parents then when i get it home, bolt it in and wire things up and get her going.

 

I am going to do the title transfer and hopefully reg. at the same time.

 

I'm fairly sure you won't have to have a current inspection sticker to get the reg. But you may have to have proof of insurance. Again, I would call the tax assessors office or go to the web site to check the requirements in your county before you make a trip down there.

 

bring it home and put a car cover over it. park it where johnny law cant easily fool with it. and go about your business. OR just MOVE outta texas

 

well unfortunately cant have a car cover either, but i got title switched and registration done so i pulled her home tonight. didnt have enough money to rent an engine hoist so gotta wait 2 more weeks before i can pull out the old iron, but atleast its home now and i can work on it whenever i want. will try to get some pics up soon. one thing i learned is that it has suprisingly soft suspension, takes speed bumps better than my durango and my coronet, hardly felt a bump at all. I remember my 4th gen firebird rode really hard over any bumps. this felt like a whole different beast, and this is all from getting towed home lol

 

also i tried hooking up a battery to it so i could turn the lights, dont know if it matters theres no starter hooked up but i didnt get anything to turn on so looks like i have some electrical to work out, honestly the wiring is a mess in the dash, basically the dash is trashed, gonna start looking into the mess tomorrow, as i really havent even tried messing or with anything since i got the bird few months ago.

 

Got the old 350 pulled out yesterday, going to drop in new engine today, both are firsts for me

 

got the 305 in, had a hell of a time aligning the motor to motor mounts, other than that was smooth sailing. i was doing this outside and cold under a tree ankle deep in mud. just need to align and put in transmission bolts then timing chain gaskets and intake.
