87 tpi 383 stroker guidance
I'm hoping someone can give me some suggestions. I picked up a 87 GTA with a 350 TPI and a 700r4. I am wanting to build it into a 383 stroker and keep the TPI I have built carbed 383 and just kept the 400 flywheel and balancer to keep it balanced and never had problems. But I have never built one with tpi and was hoping one of you has done this that feels like helping. This will just be a weekend driver could someone suggest which cam, injectors, etc that I might need to get this together? I'd appreciate any help, thanks.

Comp cams makes a 268 xfi that would work pretty well in it. Injector size will depend on other modifications being done to the motor. Will you be keeping the stock tpi set up or go aftermarket?

Re: 87 tpi 383 stroker guidance
Thanks for the reply but I'm not sure how much I'm going to change on it but the intake was already ported but was hoping to keep the stock tpi. It has pretty decent sized primarys on the headers but I'm open to suggestions as long as its not overly expensive. I'm keeping the stock heads though and just replacing the springs and rockers. Any idea which ones to use there?

Re: 87 tpi 383 stroker guidance
Just my 2 cents Josh, The 2 things that are going to suffocate that motor are the stock runners and the stock heads. With the stock intake ported, that will help air flow some, but will need SLP ported runners or TPIS big runners at least, but then the other restriction will be the stock heads. Going through the expense of building a 383 only to choke it off on the intake isn't really worth it. Now if you wanted to stay TPI, barring any expense, I would port the intake or even get an Edelbrock TPI intake ported and port the SLP runners, with at least 180-195cc aluminum heads, 24lb injectors, a cam to match, and a custom tune. You would be in the 400 rwhp range.

Springs should always match the cam. As for rockers I am running comp cams pro magnum 1.6 ratio and have no complaints. How much power are you looking to make?

383 is a torque monster motor. Combined with the TPI, match the cam with peak toque at 4300 and peak HP at at 5200 or so with matching heads and you've got one hell of a street motor that will have a hard time keeping the tires on.
