I have a roller Gen 1 350 .030 SB. with Cast Crank and Rods. I am using Trickflow twisted wedge heads, GM ZZ3 Roller cam 208/221, lb 112.

Looking for some 350+ HP out of this engine. I am looking to replace my pistons with some Hypereutectic ones.

There are several brands on the market. But KB and Speedpro seem to stand out.

I will not be running any NOS nor Boost not the engine.

HI, thanks for your comment. i have done some web research and the opinion on the KB is either love or hate... which I don't see with SpeedPro... I want something reliable. any more thoughts?

 

well, KB has a rep that cant be beat. on the other hand, speed pro is very good too. I have used both and always have gotten good results from both.

 

I have speed pro's in basically the same motor and I'm pushing 330hp on my motor. No issues in over 6 years.

 

and there you have your answer, I prefer KB because of their being closer at "0" deck than speed pro. however, speed pro cant be counted out either. basically, you need not consider any others but these two choices.

 

I went with speed pro because they were cheaper. Also, my shop didn't deck the block. Make sure you Zero deck your block. It was a stupid oversight on my part.

 

correct blue printing of the block is a "end all , be all " kinda thing. if your piston is down in the hole any at TDC you give away compression. the idea is to have the top of the piston flush with the block at TDC. I cannot overstate the importance of balancing and blueprinting. these two things are the difference between a well running engine and a grenade

 

I'm not a fan of speed pros. I rebuilt my 383 last spring and the keepers were being pushed out of the piston. Had too tap all the wrist pins out with a hammer. Soft metal from a made in India piston.

I can't say I'll grenade my motor, but I probably left 50hp on the table by not knowing I really needed to do it. This was before I really started digging into the nuts and bolts of it all by "trusting" the builder. Yeah, never again.

 

Our 388 motor had Keith Black pistons in it and we raced using those pistons for 8 years.

 

it is sometimes hard to find a honest ,knowledgeable engine builder. those of us who care to build for longevity. always ask the owner a bazillion questions before the first bolt gets turned

 

Some very late 92 TPI motors got the LT1 hypereutectic pistons, they are lighter but don't spark knock them much or you'll have a oil pan full of pistons..

LT1s and the LS motors run them with great success (for a stock piston)

 

I've run both and would run either one again - even sprayed 150 shot on a set of speed pro's after running it in a circle track engine for almost 3 seasons turning 65-6700 rpm. Ran a set of KB's in a 377 turning 7800 for 2 seasons with no problems too.

If you go speed pro there are 2 pistons = the H345's which have a 1.548 pin height and a H273 that has a 1.605 pin height

 

Thanks to all for the replies.. I have never imagined there is that much involve in pistons... I am looking for a reliable engine.. My engine block had some flat badger B557 pistons and I just basically want to replace them with some hyper eutectic pistons. I need a part number that matches those badger B557 pistons. Any thoughs?
