New member with engine questions

How's it going, I'm new to the forums. I just picked up an 85 z28 shell last week and I'm doing a carbed 350 for it. I have an lt1 cam for it. My first question is what kind of timing gear do I have to use with an lt1 cam? I took a small block Chevy one from a flat tappet cam and matched it up and it doesn't fit at all, so I have to get the proper timing chain set before I put it together. For now that's about it. I'm petty good at figuring most things out but I'm sure I'll have questions throughout the build. Thanks!

Re: New member with engine questions

You have to have a timing gear for the factory roller system.

You also will have to have a factory roller retainer plate.

If your block is not equipped for the factory roller system, you'd be better off getting rid of the lame stock cam and getting something actually worth the money and effort instead, in the version of roller stuff that we all used to use for all the years back before the factory introduced their thing.

Re: New member with engine questions

Well I got a roller block with the plate, lifters and lifter retainers, and it's a comp cam for an lt1 that I got new via Craigslist ad for 75 bucks still in the box, so that was a pretty decent score. Just wasn't sure about the cam sprocket, as I had an old one laying around and figured I'd see if it fit. Thanks for the info tho. I can get one from say an 88 camaro 350 and it'll work?
