Crank Pulley question

I have a 1982 Camaro Z-28 and looking to replace the crank pulley and harmonic balance along with swapping out the power steering, alt, and water pump pulleys to chrome some day, if possible. Now I'm running into some issues. First, I'm not sure if it's the original engine in it, my guess would be no. 2nd, It did have AC but now that's gone. So what I'm left with is a crank pulley with 3 groves, 2 V and one Serp. One of the V leads to the power steering pump, the other V isn't used. The serp leads to the water pump, and then to the alt.

So, I'm confused, I imagine the owner before me did a couple of modifications to make it work right. I'd just like to replace the pulleys with the right ones to make it right and look nice! I'd appreciate any help.

Re: Crank Pulley question

Use polished alum. rather than chrome pulleys.. The chrome is too slick and belt can/will slip, also the chrome rusts.

Myself, I would just zip the alt. pulley off with an impact gun and put a std. V belt pulley on it, and use a 2 groove lower pulley, 1 groove water pump pulley.

1 V belt around crank, water pump and alt.
1 V belt around crank and PS

I have used Summit racing house brand alum. pulleys on 2 of mine engines and love them. Work great, look great, and priced pretty good.

Crank http://www.summitracing.com/parts/su...make/chevrolet
Water pump http://www.summitracing.com/parts/su...make/chevrolet
Alt http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g3968/overview/
PS http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g3975/overview/

Here is a few pictures showing mine.. Pics ran a course of about 8 years so you will see changes to engine/car but same summit alum. pulleys... In some pics they are dirty and not as shiny.

Thanks bud, that's about perfect what I wanted to see. Do you have a link to the belts in the picture, or ones that will work close? And how can you tell the difference between a long and short water pump?

Re: Crank Pulley question

Belts.. Just depends on pulleys, brackets, etc. I just used a string that I wrapped around my pulleys and then measured and added 1/2" to that measurement to get my belts.

Here is a little tip.. Common chevy V belt angle is 15*.. Belt part # is length and angle..

So say you needed a 43.5" V belt... The number would be one of the two depending on what brand/store 15435 (V angle and length) or 43515 (length and V angle)

Short water pump vs long water pump... You can slide your fingers between timing chain cover and back of water pump on a long pump... Short pump almost touches the timing cover.
Short pumps was used in the mid 1950's through mid 60's

Here's is a couple of pics..

Re: Crank Pulley question

I just looked through my info and found this..

My belt sizes / part #
32.5" PS belt # 15325
42" alt belt # 15420

My pulley sizes are....
But my pulleys are alittle diff sizes than the ones I listed in the links on summit now. I wernt smaller on the crank pulley and bigger on other pulleys to give a big underdrive % to mine to free up a tad of power.

2 groove crank front groove 5.50''
2 groove crank second groove 5.50''
1 groove water pump 6.60''
1 groove alt 2.812''
1 groove power steering 5.750''

I'm using a 1971 monte carlo PS pump on my car, with a homemade bracket..
CS130 alt with the common L shaped lower bracket and the curved upper bracket that bolts to water pump and intake.

Re: Crank Pulley question

Sorry for taking awhile to reply. I measured my pulleys for belt length and got a similar size for the crank but i measured around 36" for my Power steering. I think I'm gonna go with your crank pulley belt and then look for one that's closer to my size and hope and pray it works!

FWIW, the mixed V-belt/multi-groove flat belt was the '86-'87 model year system.

Personally, I prefer the multi-groove flat belt to V-belt. Grips better, squeaks less.
