Re: want a 496
thx man, lol. from what I have learned the best route is to find an old 454 and then stroke it out.

Re: want a 496
Your block to find is a Mark IV 454 which was from about 1970 to 1990. If you're lucky, you may still find one in an 80's pickup truck but it won't have good head castings. Finding a junkyard block will probably mean it needs a rebuild anyway so it's going to need a 0.030" overbore and with a 4.250" stroke crank you need to buy, that will make a 496. If the block casting doesn't have any core shift, you could punch out the cylinders to 0.070" over but that's pushing it with an OEM block.
781 and 049 factory oval port heads are the best to use for any street use. Finding a used set like the engine will probably need to be rebuilt. There's a lot more pocket change stuff required. Gaskets, bearings, bolts etc.
So when you count all the new parts required and all the machine work required to build the engine, I'd say an expected budget can easily go over $5000 and after it's installed in the car, even higher. What kind of goodies you want in the engine to make it reliable is up to you.
Looking at Jegs, I see a streetable fully assembled 540 for $10k and a 496 with aluminum heads for $8k making 575HP and 600TQ. It's unlikely you're going to build one for that price unless you're doing all the machine work and assembly yourself.
It's also a package deal. Making lots of power means nothing if you can't get it to the ground. I saw a good replay to a post recently. Start at the back and move forward. A more powerful engine is the last thing you should be putting in the car.

Re: want a 496
Even on a budget before doing the swap you have a lot you have to do beforehand.. New fuel pump for the high HP, new drive shaft and rear end, Upgraded braking system, subframe connectors, and a lot more. I'm also budgeting an engine swap in my t/a. And all the back end work is the most tedious but required. I hope you considered that. That's a big engine so a lot of work needs to be done before you even start. I hope you do eventually get it done though. Would love to see one of those under the hood

Re: want a 496
true true, and thk u. I will have to git a move on however b/c I just bought a 454 running with 54k orig. miles on it. I know what your thinking "it probably doesn't have 54k on it", but it does. and it really doesn't matter b/c the entire engine is warranty (6mo.) IN WRITING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't have to spend a dime having it installed I'm doing that myself. but to address the other issues I will have to git a move on so I can drive it b4 the warranty ends to check it out more.thx

A running 454. What year is it? A mark V engine is ok for a basically stock engine but the block design and peanut port heads offer no performance potential.

Not much need to post on the Interwebz about THAT. Pretty basic stuff, people do it every day.
