i 'm changing my timing chain set but i noticed that to have my rotor pointing at # 1cylinder with the exhaust stroke my cam mark is at 12 and crank is at 12 if i rotate the the crank to 12 and cam to 6 then my rotor is at #6 cylinder at the exhaust stroke is this correct? i remember doing sbc with the marks at 12 and 6 rotor at #1 and all was good ..realy need to hear from people that know the answer..thanks

"Both dots up" is #1 firing.
"Dot to dot" is also #1 TDC, but it's NOT #1 firing. It's #6 firing, but #1 exh valve closing and int valve opening. We build em there because it's eeeeezier to see, then we turn em to "both dots up" to drop the dist in.
So yeah, what you're seeing, and doing, is EXACTLY correct.

no need to remove the distributor to replace the timing chain.
just line up the dots.. remove the old timing chain / cam gear.. install the new set "dot to dot" and done. most important don't crank over the engine until you install the new set.
