Advice on condition of recent 85 Trans Am Purchase

hey Dudes,

I'm purchased this car as a base for my K.I.T.T conversion. It was 3k. It has a rebuilt (10 years ago) 305 V8 LG4 and I *think* it has WS6.

Dash was replaced. Was sprayed black from burgundy. There is also practically zero emissions gear on the car. I don't have the build sheet or order invoice. It's currently at the shop to get the smog gear installed.

This is my first trans am. Any advice on its condition appreciated!

Sounds sorta grim.

Good luck! I hope you abandon the KITT thing though, too few of these cars in the world already, to mutilate yet another that way.

Thanks for the reply.

I think i can get where you are coming from. Is it really that douchey though to want to do that to the car?

Are Knight Rider fans regarded as sad losers in the 3rd Gen scene? I'm actually genuinely asking this as a question.

I just grew up loving the show, and therefore loving the Trans Am. The thing that made me passionate about the car, was the show.

Where i come from, you could not buy a Trans Am at all, and so this was my dream car ever since i moved to the states and i knew at some point i had to own one.

I think if i do the K.I.T.T conversion, i'll likely also buy another Trans Am later and not modify it as i do generally love the cars.

Yours is not a rare car and it is your car. I see no prob with building a K.I.T.T from it.

Here is my advise though.. I have seen MANY K.I.T.Ts started, never finished, hack jobs, etc.

Look at all the info before you start, make a good plan, set your budget and funds right to finish the job and follow through with it.

It is a big undertaking and can get to be high dollar to do and finish.

Thanks Dude,

I actually have an Asana project with all of the tasks so far.

If you were willing to advise on it it I could definitely invite you :-)

There was a kitt replica at a local car show a month back, this guy put a lot of work to make it realistic. Just make sure you're very comfortable with all the wiring. If you do it incorrectly you run the risk of burning it to the ground. Good luck! I'm sure there is a write up some where on the web for it

And therein lies the problem...

Too many cars with the misfortune to start out life black, hacked up to re-create a 6-yr-old kid's fantasy from a long-gone childhood that no one else cares about any more except the 10 or whatever that won't let it go. (no doubt if Barney or the Teletubbies had had a fantasy car based to a similarly loose extent on reality, there'd be a few of THOSE people, too...)

Some people think that show SUCKS, others LOVE it. That's sorta beside the point. The point being, THE CAR has some sort of value in not being hacked up, which of course gets destroyed forever when hacked that way. There's actually decent money in supplying un-sodomized pieces to UNdo partially complete those.

Yes I've seen more than a few incomplete of those hack-ups in the junkyard. And GUESS WHAT... all the "kitt" stuff just sat there, they couldn't GIVE it away; but the remaining unmolested LG4 stuff and undamaged body parts and lights and rear ends and whatnot, got recycled. Go figure. There's your indicator of "relative value" of "kitt" vs car.

My advice would be, acquire ALL the parts to do whatever that hack job consists of (I have no clue... to me that show was for my younger friends' younger kids when it came out) before you TOUCH the car.

I think that's fair advice - and honestly - given the amount of stripping you have to do - it probably should be the only way of going about it. You are bit harsh on knight rider fans though :-/ It's just a hobby.
