Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
Car is:
1983 Camaro Sport Coupe
T-Top
Engine: LG4, 5-Liter V8, 305cid Transmission: Borg-Warner Manual 5-speed
(is this transmission the non-world class (NWC) T-5?)
I called O'Reilly Auto Parts this morning and have their suggestion.
Before I post what O'Reilly's is, I'd like opinions from the "real" experts here.
Re: What is the correct gear oil for my manual tranny
Yes that transmission is the 1st design, from before that stooooopid PIT Team Six Sigma TQM ISO 9000 buzzword got applied to the 2nd design of that product. (assuming of course that it hasn't been swapped out)
Either will work fine.
In fact, the factory waffled back and forth on that acoupla times, I guess depending on whether the gas mileage team (ATF) or the warranty team )gear lube) won th eargument that particular year, all while there were NO CHANGES WHATSOEVER to the actual PARTS.
For that matter you could probably even run em half & half if you were too timid to pick just one.
If I was still running one of those I'd use gear lube; Mobil1 75W-90.

Prior to posting this thread, I did indeed peruse these Forums, including Searches and that thread...and I thought my head would explode trying to find a simple answer to a simple question...
"WHAT IS THE CORRECT GEAR OIL FOR MY TRANSMISSION?"
I could choose (quotes from different posts):
"most" T-5's use ATF Dextron II:
"Everything I have seen on this board says 75w-90 weight gear oil for a 83-87"
"I've even heard of people running 30 wt. motor oil in non-WC T5's non-world-class T5"
"Ford and GM say to use ATF" "ppl told me to run gear oil like 80W90"
"This tranny did use 70W gear oil."
and the list goes on...and on.
So, If I want to flush out my transmission and fill with new fluid, what do I purchase at O'Reilly Auto Parts?

I did mention a bit of confusion, didn't I? As Sofa mentions whatever you chose will work fine.
Re: What is the correct gear oil for my manual tranny
.
In my Amazon account is my "Garage" for my '83 Camaro. I wanted to add the correct Borg-Warner Transmission I have but of the choices available, I don't know which one to choose.
My Amazon Garage
I know it's a Borg Warner 5-Speed Standard Transmission, but how do I know if it's an "MK4", "MK5" or an "MK6"?
I have no idea what those designations mean, or why they're important.
