Different oil filters.
If I remember correctly & I think the tip came out of the GM Performance Parts Catalog, there was the recommended stock oil filter for our third gens & then there was an extra capacity filter that had the same fit, but held almost an extra quart.
Does anyone have the two AC Delco filter numbers?

If you so with K&N, the 3002 will fit our cars also.

Re: Different oil filters.
For years I always used the longer filters for the purpose of extra oil capacity and better cooling. I have since changed back to regular length because I am afraid of a puncture through the thin skin of a low flying oil filter.
Re: Different oil filters.
I have used the long oil filter with the extra qt capacity. I have never had a prolem with these filters since my car's first oil change 28 years ago. Original owner.

Re: Different oil filters.
I used to run Delco filters, after loosing 2 motors due to the "new improved" design, I now use Wix racing or napa gold which are still using the good internals.

Old old old numbers were PF25 (short) and PF35 (tall).

Re: Different oil filters.
WIX racing is your best choice for a disposable filter. NAPA Gold is second choice. There's only a small handful of filter manufacturers. WIX and FRAM being a couple of the top ones and they make filters under many different brand names. You need to learn how to identify a filter based on design to figure out who actually made it. Some fancy filter with lots of marketing to sell it may be a crappy FRAM. A lot of house brand filters are made by WIX or FRAM. The WIX house brand isn't as good as the racing version but I'd still buy it before I put a FRAM on any of my engines. AC Delco filters are not the good filters they once were.
I run a System 1 reusable filter on my race car. Take it apart, clean it and put it back on the engine.

Wix or NAPA Gold- which are the same filter with the same part number... ask for the PF35 equivalent.. they are like $6 at NAPA..

Re: Different oil filters.
I've been using the K&N longer filter 3002, since I don't have an oil cooler factory or aftermarket so it lines up perfectly with the oil pan and doesn't stick down. The old AC Delco PF25 is what I used to use and was on my factory service manual as the replacement. The AC Delco PF454 is a smaller filter than the PF25 and no way I was going to go backwards.

Re: Different oil filters.
AlkyIROC, I am not sure I'd run a Racing WIX in everything. For example, with the 51061 the Nominal Micron Rating: 21. Step to the 51061R and the Nominal Micron Rating: 61.
OK for a race engine that doesn't require the durability of a street engine, but I'll stick with the 21 micron for my street car. Would you disagree?
