1988 Formula 5.0l
Okay so I bought a formula over the weekend, and was curious where would be the best place to order my parts? I plan to do a full resto with mostly Oem original parts minus wheels and tires and a posi rear end. I will post pics later!

Congrats on the purchase. Hope you enjoy that car for many years.
Parts... Depends on what you need really.
For performance/speed parts and some resto parts.....
Summit racing
Jegs
Competition products
For chassis/suspension parts.....
Spohn performance
Ed quay
umi performance
BMR suspension
For resto parts
Year one
Classic Industries
Hawks third gen parts
Then of course for used parts the classifieds here, guys that part out third gens. I know there is a few guys on here, me being one of them, local swap meets, craigslist, ebay, etc
As for telling what engine you know.. You know to look at the vin and RPO code list to tell what car came with, as far as whats in it you can get the codes off the engine.
Suffix code on front pass side of engine, on machined pad in front of head. You will need to clean it off good with brake parts cleaner and a wire brush
Then also the casting number on rear driver side of block, behind the head, on flange that trans bolts up too.
List any codes and I can decode them for you

Jegs, Summit and competition products all sell many diff crate engines but non will be the "correct engine block" for your car if you are wanting numbers matching/oem type build.
The only way to get the correct block by that standard would be junkyard/used shopping and rebuild it.
But if you just want a good, new small block chevy engine then yes summit, jegs, would be great places.
I like Summit better than Jegs. I have bought from Summit for 15+ years and never been unhappy with the service I received from them.

I have never seen a part store short block. All of them from Oreilly's, autozone, advance auto, etc that I have seen for sale or display has been long blocks (heads down to oil pan)
