black sludge in fresh engine ???

Engine: 3.1 Turbo/ 355 twin turbo
Transmission: a4 w/ 4500 stall/ a4 / t5
Axle/Gears: strange s60 /w 3:42's
black sludge in fresh engine ???

im thinking its the moly cam lube but ive never seen this before any ideas

pulled a few bearings and everything looked good as well , this is the first oil change since break in

cam swap , and modifying the front end of the car , making the center of the k-member removeable so i can inspect/service the bottom end at the track if needed


i got verification on another forum that the sludge is infact the moly came lube i ran when i installed the cam

Yeah that's what it looks like it is...

That's why I quit using moly as assembly lube after about my 2nd motor back in the 70s. Great stuff; its lube properties are awesome; but...

It also plugs up oil filters.

Is that the bottom of the oil pan you're sliming that stuff around in? I assume it is. Looks like somebody went WAY overboard with the moly lube there. You're supposed to use a paper-thin thin smear of the stuff, not squeeze it out like it's a toothpaste tube.

Clean it out, fresh oil and filter and you'll be fine, though.

Well Said Damon , if that's really moly lube , in that amount at the bottom of the pan , then way too much was used in the assembly . Your description of a paper thin wipe is perfect and has been the way I've always applied the stuff .

directions say apply liberally so i did first time using that cam lube to be honest , normally i use some other stuff and just used to run 15-40 rottela for break in
