305 cam help

hello im looking for some advice on a 305 roller build il try to make this long story short I own a 88 caprice I had the motor rebuilt balanced well after install and several timing changes I was dissapionted to learn that the new cam I had installed seamed to not have the low end torque as the stock one I had replaced. it is a carb application. the cam I installed was the 14097395 chevy performance cam also known as ramjet cam .050-196/206 duration intake valve lift 0.431/ exhaust valve lift-0.451 with a supposed 109lobe separation. no one seams to know for sure and I did not receive a cam card when I got cam. I had to remove the motor due to oil leak bent timing cover. ive got it on engine stand im considering removing cam for a smaller version. maybe even back to stock or would a converter change help? also I own a 89 tbi truck and the motor is tired. im considering dropping this in there and junking te car. but ive heard I cant use this cam with tbi do to the lobe separation. by the way im running a stock 700r4 behind the 305 with stock converter any help would be greatly appreciated. if I can get back my low end with converter change id rather do that seams easiest solution. if not ill be pulling apart motor and getting new cam like I said theres a strong possibility this could end up in truck sorry so long

Re: 305 cam help

95 4.3 "W" S10 converter would liven things up. That being said the Ramjet cam is a little bigger than the factory cam but is very torquey. Sounds like to me something was not done right. The Ramjet cam was first used in the TBI Marine engines. 305 and 350s boats have used them since about 1990. I have that cam with 1.6:1 roller rockers and tri-y headers in my 350 powered Express van. 4L80E and 3.73 geard 9.5 14-bolt behind it. Despite the tall 1st gear (same as a 3.08 rearend with a 700r4) I can still break the 255/70R15s loose from a stop. I tow a 6,000 lbs 23' Jayco travel trailer and have no issues there either.

Re: 305 cam help

I agree with FAST. This cam makes great low end, works well with stock TBI tune and is great especially on stock heads because of the low lift. I know of one guy who used it on his vortec 350 and he loves it. I may go with this cam in the future if I decide to keep my TBI and upgrade to a 350 with the bigger injectors and vortec heads.

Re: 305 cam help

so I guess if I decide to put motor in truck it will work in tbi application no special chip tuning required because of the 109lsa? I will look into that 95 s10 converter also
