Won't crank over HELP!

1988 Trans am GTA, 305. After vaccuming and detailing today it decided not to start back up. When I turn the key to "on" position security light turns off after a few seconds, don't think it is vats, and I can hear the fuel pump. Then when I turn the key to "start" nothing happens, not even a click. My first guess would be that I need a new starter, but I'm not certain. Any ideas?

Re: Won't crank over HELP!

I'd check battery voltage first. If low, charge it or replace it, whichever is appropriate. If you haven't changed the starter on this vehicle it may be time. The ones on my '88 and '91s gave out shortly after I acquired them. Other less expensive things to do is to check the circuit between the battery, the starter and the ground, they wear out with time too. Last would be the ignition switch, haven't had to change one of those out yet. Good luck.

Re: Won't crank over HELP!

before you take off the starter, check for power to the purple wire going down to the starter while the key is turned to start (not run). before you do that, try moving the shifter around if it is auto ... if it is a stick, get down and look at the switch on the clutch pedal and make sure the wires did not come off while you were cleaning it ... you could even try to "jump" that plug with a wire or paperclip (but if you do that, be sure the clutch is in or it is not in gear)

I have the same problem. 1991 rs 305. Just got this car. Steering column was replaced and they never got it running since. I researched new key and had a resister made and installed. Security light comes on and then off. No cranking or throttle body. But I hear the fuel pump. Have charged battery. Moved shifter all over the place. What next..?

Re: Won't crank over HELP!

i think there is a relay or switch inside the drivers kick panel too ... still think the most common thing will be the starter is bad ... if you can get under the car you can jump the starter ... jump from the post that the battery cable connects to and the smaller post where the switched ignition wire hooks to ... this will throw some sparks but if the starter turns you know to look somewhere else ... also, if the key is in run and everything else is working, it should start up if the starter cranks when you jump it
