Engine out...new oil pump, replace pickup too?

Hey guys....basic question. Do I need a new pickup? ....I purchased a 383 shortblock from a good friend of mine. Less than 10k miles, built well beyond my needs. Engine had no issues, but my understanding was that it would be a good idea to swap oil pumps while I was in there. Picked up a melling 55hv, since that's what it had, and it has a gazillion positive reviews on pretty much any site you look at. I had just assumed that with no moving parts, and such low miles...the pick up would be fine to re-use. Thoughts???

The pickup for the 7qt. Moroso pan is like $45 bucks. Now....that's not a lot of money, but it IS a few cases of High Life.....and you know...."High Life"!

Try taking a pickup out of a pump and moving it over to a new one... you'll probably decide to replace it

Yeah.....I wondered about that. I know it's not welded....but it's still press fit. May not be removable.

You could get it out of the original just fine, your problem would be getting it to stay in the new one, granted you should be tack welding in place.

Unless something really unusual happened with that engine, there is NO need to replace the pump nor the pickup.

With only 10K miles on build, no reason or need to replace pump or pickup.

Do yourself a favor, trade that 55HV for a 55A.
No need for a high "Volume" pump unless you have excessive bearing clearance.

This has been said many, many times.
