Car takes several cranks to start

Where do I start? What should I replace? It takes 3 to 4 cranks sometimes. Only way to start it faster is by applying the accelerator.

What is fuel pressure doing?

Does the mere act of lightly pressing the gas make it start on the first attempt?

I recently replaced the fuel pressure regulator. Yes, that's the case sometimes.

Re: Car takes several cranks to start

I would start with what ploegi said and check your fuel pressure for leak down. Any reason you replaced the FPR? When the fuel system primes it should hold that pressure, if the pressure begins dropping then you have a bad pressure regulator or a leaky injector.

I changed the FPR because my car had hydrolocked with gas.

Re: Car takes several cranks to start

If I recall correctly on efi; If the engine starts when you tip the throttle in it means that there is too much fuel and you needed to introduce more air. Look into injectors or a bad idle air control valve.

around 1/3 pedal is adding fuel while cranking and to the floor is clear flood mode.

Re: Car takes several cranks to start

what is your starting procedure? it might take that long for the pump to build enough pressure to start it so if you just ramrod the key straight from "off" to "start", it's gonna take a few revolutions to light off...

what happens if you turn the key to "run" and let it prime a few seconds before hitting the key?

I hadn't seen a GM efi for a while so I wasn't sure. I knew during startup with MegaSquirt it treats the throttle as only an air valve separate of fuel calculations.

Re: Car takes several cranks to start

Step hard on the gas while cranking, and the ECM interprets that as "clear flood" and DRAMATICALLY cuts back on how much gas it squirts.

I didn't know that. That's good to know just in case.
