Different spring retainers. Alum l98

Hey fellas . Just a quick question . I'm doing a casual tear down on a 86 vette engine. And the spring retainers for the exhaust and I take valves seam different

Almost looks like a spacer . Is this a gm thing? Or after market ?

The exhaust valves get a lot hotter than intake valves. The retainer may include a rotator to help rotate the hot exhaust valve for better cooling and prevent hot spots on the seat.

Yup, that's the rotators. Useless dead weight in the worst possible place.

Throw em away. Put an extra .090" of shim under the exh springs.

The retainers themselves are the same on all.

Throw away those oil splash shields too. Use "positive" seals. Then none of that other deadweight is even excusable any more, let alone necessary.

I'm most likely to swap them out for the comp cam beehives when I upgrade the cam . As well as 1.6 roller rockers

That's certainly an option as well. In which case, you'd throw the rotators and splash shields in the trash, and shim the springs accordingly; which you'll find, the exh will take about .090" more than the int.

And of course you'll want to use positive seals.

IOW, nothing changes about the advice I gave.

I talked to comp cams today. They helped me pick out some gear . I got the loaded kit for the xe268h cam with a shim kit and the ultra pro mag 1.5 rockers . I hope this is going to work well.
