Rough idle and rich running

Im going crazy in the garage, my car runs like a piece of crap when i start it, it hardly idles and stalls if im not gentle on the throttle. i dont think that its hitting on all cylinders when its cold. it gets better when it gets up to operating temperature.
ive checked for vac leaks, fuel leaks and i changed temp sensors, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, iac and the egr. i put in an egr from a 89 with the tempsensor in my 90 camaro, does that setup work? ive checked for codes but i dont get any. it smells like it runs rich and the exhaust gas values are shot to hell.

further more, i did an engine swap from a 305 to a 350 with the correct memcal and knocksensor so thats not the issue either.

The car is a 350tpi, adjustable fuel pressure, hedman headers, new injectors, no air system, no ac, stock engine

Egr solenoid? Did you put new injectors?

Re: Rough idle and rich running

When you changed the cap and rotor and the spark plugs, did you mark all the wires before you took them off? I just did cap and rotor and wires (put a brand new distributor in) and I used a marker on the actual cap to write the cylinder number under each terminal. I also wrote the cylinder number on each of the old wires (while they were still attached to the old cap to use as a guide).
Then I printed out the firing order and laid it on the plenum and made sure that each wire went to the correct cylinder. Are you absolutely sure that you didn't cross any plug wires? I have crossed the two rear passenger plug wires before and it runs pretty terrible.

Edit: I didn't see anything about the ignition coil or the ignition control module. Do you have a large cap or small cap HEI with the external coil? If you have a multimeter, I would test that ignition coil and then take that ICM to Oreilly's to test it.

Also, is your timing setup correctly? This is all assuming that you stabbed the dizzy correctly and base timing is set to 6* BTDC with the EST wire disconnected.

Re: Rough idle and rich running

on my car there never was an egr solenoid, as ive read they removed the solenoid when maf became map. But i used an egr valve from an engine that had a solenoid, my car is from 90 and the engine i took the egr valve from is a 89. The injectors are just about brand new, only got 10 miles on them, and ive ohmed them and there is no deviation.

The wires are in correct order and the base timing is set to 6degrees with est unplugged and afterwards the battery removed, just in case. but il check the wires again when im in the garage. The car is running an hei with a separate coil and Ive tried with another coil and another icm, with no result.

The exhaust gases smell like **** and it burns the eyes when the engine is cold, it gets better when it gets up in temp. Il check the blm the next time im in the garage

Thanks for the tips though

There's like no info about your car in your post other than it was a 305 to 350 swap with tpi. You have a maf based tpi with the 165 ECM? Which calibration are you running?

Re: Rough idle and rich running

Its a map car, i dont know what memcal numbers it has, but it's correct for a 350tpi car with map

What fuelpressure am I to run with a stock 350tpi map engine? i might have way to high pressure, so all info is gladly received by me

Re: Rough idle and rich running

just to post my fix for this
it was a worn out camshaft, changed it over for another one from the garage and voila a running car
