Headers? Oh crap.

I was looking in my car and I want to get headers. Engine in or out? Also, what are some good brands.

Engine in of course If you pull the engine you might as well replace it! =)

SLP and hooker seem the be the most popular. You will not regret the extra money for ceramic coating. Takes more time to remove manifolds than actually bolt on headers. Happy shopping.

I've got the Edelbrock headers. They really helped out the sound of the car as well as acceleration. I put them on in my driveway with the engine in and it took me about 14 hours to do it. This includes taking the old cat off along with part of the old y-pipe, taking it to a shop and having it heated so I could pull the old y-pipe out.

Barring problems like this, which isn't too likely, it'll probably take 8-10 hours to do it.

If you have the money, definetely get them ceramic coated. Mine are looking crappy as anything, and the black paint that came on them turned a powdery white after the first use

SLP are the best, but are more expensive. I would definately invest in getting them coated. Reduces underhood temperatures and keeps the headers from rusting. I hear with the Hooker headers they are a bit harder to install. My brother and I installed the Edelbrocks with the motor in and took about 6 hrs. Edelbrock is a little more restrictive than other brands, but unless you're going to be building up a hot rod, I don't see anything wrong with them.

The cheapest headers I've found so far is the Hedman shorty headers. $100 for the pair. However, I found out that with these headers you have to do some "modifications". First problem is the y-pipe. The factory y-pipe will NOT bolt up to these headers w/out modifications. I learned this from my friend when he put his on his formula. So I went ahead and bought the hedman y-pipe that is made for these headers, thinking that will be a quick fix. Well, after I bought the $100 y-pipe and put the headers on I found out that it also had to be modified on the drivers side. Needless to say, I wasn't too happy. As far as the headers themself, I had to slightly dent the passenger side header to clear the larger starter used with the two piece rear main blocks. I don't know if I would have had any problems with any of the other brands of headers or not but if I had it all to do over again I wouldn't have bought the hedman headers.
