Fuel smell after shut off / trouble starting

Hello, I appreciate any help in advance.
I am second owner of a 1992 Convertible RS with 12K original miles, yes I know I need to drive it more! I took it out twice so far this summer and after each ride upon shutting the car off I smell gas near the back end of the car. When I go to restart it takes a lot of cranks and some pumping of the gas, then she fires up. Once started she runs out strong without hesitation. The trouble is only with starting the car. Do I look to the fuel pump or other areas? I am worried about the gas smell and potential small leak. It has the original 305 throttle body set up in it. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you!

it is probably your fuel pump, when u turn the key to get power not start it, do you hear a buzzing or humming noise in the back by the gas tank? If not your fuel pump is probably bad. I have had the same issue before. To replace it u would have to either take the exhaust off then fuel tank out to replace because it is at the top of the tank. Or u pull the rug out from the top in the car and cut through the floor to make a bypass to get to it, which is what I had found on my 88 formula, and that is probably why u are smelling the gas too.

Desilva,

Thank you for your feedback on the issue, I will proceed with checking out the fuel pump.

Do a fuel PSI check and has the fuel filter ever been changed?
