454 TBI throttle body on 355 cui engine ??

454 TBI throttle body on 355 cui engine ??

Hi mates.

My name is Jan, i am living in germany. I was active in this board before a few years. My nickname was 88´TransAM and now, i did not find my password to log into my old account. Password request does not work, too. So, i made a new account.

My car is an 88´Pontiac Firebird TransAM 305 TBI. In 2010, i swapped the engine to a 383 stroker engine with AFR 195 heads, Jones cam, edelbrock air gap intake manifold with adapter plate and 454 BBC throttle body with 80´inhectors @9-13 PSI. Car runs nice and fast, but now, i have to make an downgrade to 355 SBC. Otherwise, i have to spend 10000 Euro to german TUEV to get a new licence plate.... :-(((((

The engine capacity is too big for this car in germany, the other things are not the problem.

So, of course, shortblock is bored to 4.030 inches. You know the stroker theory. Now, i will buy another crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons. Not the problem.

The question is, can i use my BBC 454 TBI unit on this 355 cui engine in the future ?


I have forget to say. Cam is 280/286; 224/226 @0.05" 110° LC, Lift 0.535" intake, 0.528" exhaust with 1:1.6 roller rockers; ECM is an EBL.


Nobody use 454 throttle body on 355 cui engine ???? Please help..

Yes, with your cam and heads it will put you in a horsepower range where the 454 tbi is required.

You can use 454 TB with 64lb injectors installed in the fuel pod unit. IMHO 80 lb may be just too rich at idle as injector pulse width will get below 1.0 mSec - And did I mention you'll have to go to custom tune. EBL is the way to go when ever I deal with non stock configurations. You may need to adjust AE and PE settings to compensate for larger bores (46 vs 52mm). So why TUEV is crawling up your ****?? And welcome back.

At the moment (383cui), 80´injectors are @9-14 PSI with vacuum fuel pressure regulator. You mean, i cannot handle the idle with the advantage of the vacuum fuel pressure regulator ? I own the EBL for years. It´s great !! :-)

If you have VRFPR that helps with running 80 lb injectors on top of 350 engine. It is always preferred to run a smaller injector at higher operating pressure vs. large injector at lower operating pressure. A large injector at lower operating pressure will be spraying larger fuel droplets vs. a fine fuel mist for small injector. If you're in a bind and since you already own ZT2+EBL go for what you have first and see how well it works. At later time, if you need to, you can transition to 64 lb injectors.

Yes, i forgot to say, i own zeitronix zt2 WBO, too. I will try it, if it doesn´t work, i will change to smaller injectors..

since the engine looks the same 355 and 383 why don't you tell the government you have the 355, are they going to tear it apart and measure?

Yes, i know. But i want to have the same cylinder volume in the engine and the papers... Just want to drive my transam without any problems with police or government..

I have the 80 lb injectors with a VRFPR on my 360, no problem. Not perfect but neither was it from the factory.

It is easy to measure the engine displacement via the spark plug hole. No need to tear it down.
