Should I buy this engine or look elsewhere?
Hi everyone,
There's a full 350 LT1 for sale near me, but there's a catch. It's got a rod knock. I'm a novice when it comes to engine mechanics but I've been doing a lot of research to learn what I can. Now, what would you recommend? I buy this engine and fix it, or build my own? It's from a 97 trans am and it's selling for $350 although I'm sure I could ask to pay for less. It's a complete engine from pan to headers (which are f body summit headers).
What does everyone think I should do to get the most for my money? I appreciate everyone's input!

I'd look elsewhere, my understanding is that the lt1 engines aren't worth the hassle of swapping into a thirdgen. plus a rod knock is a pretty serious repair for someone who is a novice at engine mechanics.

I agree. I happen to specialize in LT1's, but would NEVER recommend converting one to use in a vehicle that didn't come with one. You could buy a FUNCTIONAL Vortec engine for barely any more money and save youself mucho hassle and $$'s.
$100 would be a reasonable price for a factory motor with a rod knock, not $350.

With a rod knock? Engine is worth about $50 for a core value. Chances are it will need a new crankshaft and con rod.
Everything else about the engine is what you're paying for. Is it all that worth $350 to you?

Good point everyone thanks a ton. What about a running 350 from a pickup?

I see in your profile your car is a 2.8 six , correct ?
If so , and if you think that 350 is gonna just "drop right in there" , your gonna have issues .......
Issues such as you do realize an 8 cylinder engine will not bolt up to your transmission , yes ? Even though they may both be "700R4" s , there is a different bellhousing pattern from the 6 to the 8 and so an 8 cyl transmission will be needed . The engine wiring harness is totally different between the engines and only someone WELL versed in automotive electrical should be trusted to do the wiring changes needed if it's not to become yet another butcher case . You do know your 8 cyl engine will be heavier than the 6 , and so new front springs will be required to keep it from bottoming out and the exhaust for your 6 is totally unsuitable to making any power with an 8 , right ? I am well aware of what is going to be needed to perform this engine swap. I've been planning it since I got the car. I know it's not just going to drop in there and be ready to drive away, although that would be wonderful wouldn't it?
The rear end will need to be changed as well as everything you've mentioned above. I'll also be changing to manual transmission. It's going to be a lot of work, but I'm okay with that. And it may cost me some change, but in the end I'll be very happy with the result. And that's what I'm going for. Plus, I have this wonderful site to ask questions, and I'm sure there will be folks out there who will assist me.

If you have not yet begun to amass a lot of parts yet , I'd be looking far and wide for a mildly wrecked (rear ended is best) one with the 8 cyl and standard transmission cause then you get every last part down to the nuts & bolts all in one easily delivered package . Even if it's a rusty one that still runs , as a "drivetrain donor" you'd be miles ahead WRT the parts chase over buying each part one at a time and paying the premium for each "one of" sale . Hell , even such mundane things as the radiator are different along with all the rest mentioned , altogether added up the parts car route , if it's the right parts car at the right price , could be a real financial savior to your project .
