Rebuilding 305 TPI

I just picked up an 86 iroc that has a broken rod in the motor. the car is pretty original so I want to keep everything together and don't want to build another race car so I'm looking for pointers on how to at least optimize this build. I'll install a comp cam roller with new springs and lifters but not sure if I should upgrade Pistons or rods for longevity ? Are the heads worth doing a small port on ? It seems there's back and forth on the vortec head swap although my car does have an edelbrock intake on it already..I'll need to replace valve stem seals anyway. Any pointers I could get would be greatly appreciated, I've owned the car about 3 weeks and just joined the site.
Thanks,

Re: Rebuilding 305 TPI

I'd bore it, put a lil more can in it,new pistons and rods and do a lil work on the heads. Those heads arent bad heads actually. Its maf so it can handle a lil more modding but definitely a tune would help it get the most out of your mods.for sure do headers and 3in exhaust.
