if it's a roller cam yes. if not you'll wipe out the cam in the first 20 min. new cam -new lifters. old cam -old lifters in the same place they came out of. or new lifters. new cam -old lifters verry bad kiss the cam bye bye.

do not use new cam old lifters.
in the first minit a new cam/lifter is fired up, the lifters set up a wear pattern.
its only like 150 for the new cam and lifters, so just do that.

yup, if it's a flat tappet cam you need new lifters. I just purchased a crane extreme cam and lifters for $78 from summit, so you shouldn't have to spend too much money.

If it is the engine in your firebird it should have roller lifters, so you can reuse them.

Roller cams/lifters do not develop a wear pattern (in theory) so it's OK to reuse the lifters with a new (roller) cam. You'll notice that almost none of the roller cams advertised say they come with lifters.

However, flat tappet cams do develop a wear pattern so the lifters need to be replaced with the cam. Again, notice that almost all flat tappet cams advertised include new lifters.

You cannot use roller lifters with a flat tappet cam or vice versa.

Flat tappet cams are so cheap (compared to a roller cam), that you might as well put a new cam in. As a "quick fix" on old engines, I have replaced lifters only with no problems. But they were "lo-performance beer wagons" and we didn't really care much about the cars. But I know a few guys that did this on some late 70s-early 80s SBCs (the era when Chevys had cam problem) and they didn't last very long.

Well, it is not a stock cam but It has been used. It is still in the same block, and I planned on using new lifters in it. I guess it is my best bet anyway, because I dont know where the old ones went anymore.
