Hey guys im new to the board. I am having some major issues with 91 trans 350 tpi. It was running fine then all the sudden just wouldnt rev above 1000 rpm. Opened the hood to find a 3 of the drivers side wires were burned on the exhaust manifold. I replaced the plugs and wires and checked to make sure and the plug wires were in the right order. Started it and it ran like a scolded ape. The once it went into closed loop it wouldnt go over 2000 rpm and at wot sounded like i had a giant cam. This whole time i had no engine light. Well i reset the computer and drove it and it started doing the same thing but this time an engine light came on and i checked the code and it was the temp coolant sensor. I replaced it and i went ahead and had the icm checked and it was good. Cap and rotor are new. So after all that i fired it up and the only way i could get it to fire and barley run was to quickly depress and release the throttle and if i hold it down it dies. If i release it it dies. Any idea what could be going on? Oh and since i replaced the temp sensor the check engine light is off.

Did some maintenance take place before this happened? I don't see how three plug wires would 'suddenly' come into contact with the exhaust manifold and melt through. What if anything was done just prior to this problem?

 

Yes i just missed the plug wires being in contact with the manifold. The guy i got it from put brand new plug wires on. I looked through it before i got it and missed that.

 

Ok, depending on how the wires failed and how long they were ran that way, it's possible that the voltage in the secondary became great enough to ruin the coil.

 

The ignition coil? Or the pick up coil or should i replace both?

Did you replace the coolant sensor on the front of the intake manifold or the. Sending unit in the head?

 

It was the sensor in the intake.

 

Hey guys just an update hoping someone has a few more ideas. I checked the ignition coil and it tested fine. It kinda acts as if all the cylinders are misfiring at different times. Thanks guys.

 

Whens the last time the ICM (ignition control module) was replaced? Its located in the distributor.

 

If you have original injs, ohm test them and also do a fuel psi test.
