Winshield washer pump replacement .

I have a 1984 Z 28. I bought a new washer pump for the car .
How do I get the old one off ? Is there a clip of some sort holding it into the washer motor assembly ? Or does it just pull straight down and out ? Do I have to remove the washer motor from the car to change the washer pump ?
Thanks.

I have an 86 Z28 and the washer pump just pulls out without removing motor. Mine isn't clipped in.

There's a L shaped clip at the bottom of the motor housing. It's a little tricky to remove without breaking away the plastic of the housing it clips into. The new pump should have come with a new clip. It's not uncommon for the plastic to be busted, and the clip missing.

From the 87 Service Manual. I know 86 is the same, and IIRC 84 is too.

Note the new clip in this shot of a replacement pump.

Thank you .does the cover have to come off the motor to remove the clip ? Which way does the clip come out ? Will pump stay in place if I do break the clip ?

No need to remove the cover. If I remember correctly, the locking tab on the clip is the side that goes under the pump. No hints for getting it out, I personally have a 50% success rate - I broke one, the other came out without breaking. Even if the plastic around the clip breaks, the tension from the terminals will keep the pump from falling out. It's just highly advisable to be extra careful and not break it. Easier said than done.

Re: Winshield washer pump replacement .

Thank you and everyone that replied to my question . Thanks to all of you I know how to do the job correctly. I am used to working on my Corvette and I am new to Camaros. I am sure I will have many, many more questions in this forum before I am finished restoreing this car with and for my Grandson . Once again Thank You .

Re: Winshield washer pump replacement .

I've removed this clip twice; it's super easy but I'll be danged if I can remember how I did it.

Edit:

I just did it a third time. Get a 1/8" flat bladed screw driver and put it between the clip and the slot as shown in the diagram above, 90-degress to the pump body (straight in). Now twist the screwdriver as if you were loosening a screw. The clip will snap and release. No breakage.
