Transmission Question for 87 IROC
Hi there, this is my first post and I'm new here. I currently just bought a 87 IROC 5 speed with the 302 in it. Its all original and has been very well kept with 68K original miles. My question is, and I'm only asking to be more prepared for when things down the road maintenance wise could happen, but my question is I believe those came with the T-5 transmissions? Is there any place that carries essentially rebuilt ones, and or repair parts for one? Or is your best but to just get them from Ebay and there the original ones but used. I personally know enough about cars to get me by, but certainly don't feel comfortable doing transmission work if I had to. I wouldn't be opposed to buying a exact fit transmission to replace it with if need be. Also how long do those transmissions last if they haven't been abused. I don't plan on driving my IROC like a mad man, and I'm usually pretty gentle on my current new cars. Are the manual 5 speed transmission hard to find for these cars as well...I imagine somewhat? Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Transmission Question for 87 IROC
You're correct, the transmission in your car should be a T-5.
My son destroyed my T5 4 days after I bought my IROC. I found a rebuilder in Lawrenceville, Georgia that specializes in T5's and other manual transmissions after a fruitless search online for a suitable replacement, cost was around $900.00. It actually cost me less to rebuild what I had, rather than buy someone's used-up transmission, and ultimately having to rebuild it.
Most used transmissions I've had the misfortune to find online were utter junk, at best rebuildable cores....though I have seen some excellent ones offered on this forum.
Best of luck with your IROC!

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
Yes, it is a T5, but not all T5s are created equal. V6 T5s have a smaller input shaft and are even weaker than the V8 T5s. And, later a "World Class" T5 was introduced, which is better than the earlier version.
And, the f-body T5 is not the same as the Stang T5.
There is a Transmissions and Drivetrain forum here where there is a lot more information about the T5, including a sticky thread on T5 FAQs (https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...ything-we.html). Take a look around there.

Oh, and assuming it is stock, your engine is a 305, not a 302 (sorry).

Re: Transmission Question for 87 IROC
Yeah thanks for correcting me...I'm learning about things as I go. I read this place called hawk motorsports rebuilds them. They seem okay, I called and spoke to them and they said they repair them all the time. I assume u give it to them and they know what to do. Have you ever heard of these guys? I wonder if the previous owner from the classic car dealership I'm buying this from has rebuilt the tranny before. I'm going to try and find it all out when I get it, that's for sure.

Re: Transmission Question for 87 IROC
Why are you worried about the trans at 68k miles? It's not a big deal - any good shop that does transmissions could rebuild one. They aren't complicated.

Well that's good to know....figured parts were rare or hard to come by...some places iv researched make them sound like there not built to last past 50K it seems.

Re: Transmission Question for 87 IROC
Same trans was used on all 83 to 92 third gens. Also fox body mustangs. It's not at all rare. It's also not at all desireable. A whole rebuild kit is about 100 bucks. Nothing rare or unusual or difficult here. If it blows swap to a T56 instead. Hawks sells complete kits for this swap and the T56 can handle whatever.

There's a lot of information here about it. You can get all the parts used from newer model (4th gen) F bodies.
