XR282HR, HSR, L98 questions.
XR282HR, HSR, L98 questions.
Hey everyone. I recently came across a xr282hr cam kit, lifters, springs, the whole thing.
I have a L98 in my car with hooker headers, dual exhaust, a Holley stealth ram intake and a custom tune.
I would like to make this cam work, I know the heads need to be gone through with the new equipment and springs, machineing for clearance and probably be ported out while I'm at it.
Will the stock bottom end need to be swapped out or will it take the cam just fine? The bottom end is in good shape.
Thanks for any input !

Stock bottom is fine. Car wont make power over 6000 with stock heads and i would set a limiter to 6300-6400 ish if you ever get bigger better heads
Re: XR282HR, HSR, L98 questions.
Any estimates on power gain over stock with the ported heads and cam?

Stealth ram is fine with that cam. We ran a more aggressive one on a stockish bottom end L98 with hsr but with old afr 190 heads. Was good for 350-360 whp and shift by 6400
Power depends alot on how much the heads are ported. Stock head gain maybe 20-25 whp i'd guess

Would you have any head recommendations, or would porting and machineing the l98s work well?

Iron L98 heads? Porting iron is timing consuming and more expensive if you dont do it yourself. Alot of money to get them decent. Time you cut them for a 2-2.02 valve and port everything, you'll see 250-260 cfm but have alot of coin tied up in them. Not bad but not great compared to what else is out there.
Aftermarket all depends on budget. Any good aluminum in the 180-195cc port size will set you back atleast 1100-1200 on lower end for good quality
All depends on your goals. If upgrading down the road, keep L98's stock but setup for the lift. A good combo would be something like afr 195's with that cam. But aint cheap. But would make great power if bottom end is good shape. ( Ring seal is good)

I wouldn't mind spending that kinda of money on the afr 195s. I got the cam kit and stealth ram for a steal so I'll use that saved money for a good set of heads. Thanks for the info

Re: XR282HR, HSR, L98 questions.
I suggest that you get a stall converter, if you really want that cam to work well.
Aerohead Racing prepared the 601 castings on my Camaro. The gasket matching, blended bowls, and overall workmanship is excellent.
Good luck with your car.

yes I have a 2500 stall that I will use. The car has a 700r4 so I may need to look into upgrading it for the power. But this will be strictly a street car so..

Yes they will make more power in the 5500-6500 range where the stealth ram likes to shine.
3600 stall would be better but 2500 can work, just a tad soft til 4000 rpm where the cam wants to come in. Sorta like a ls1 powerband

Re: XR282HR, HSR, L98 questions.
if you choose the 72* option you can only get it with angled plugs, which my hookers won't work with.

Re: XR282HR, HSR, L98 questions.
Your hsr is slotted for either style right? I remember mine was. If so get whatever pattern you want. I ran hooker long tubes with L98 Angle plug afr 195's and had good clearances. Dont know what they are like with shorties if thats what you run
Re: XR282HR, HSR, L98 questions.
It may be all I remember is having to make angled shims to make it work. And yes I'm running shorties. Lots to think about and I sent aeroheads an email seeing what they offer as well. Now just some roller rockers and I'm done (for now)
