I hope someone can help me, I'm in the UK & have bought a 454 engine with the above casting number which has had the engine number ground off & replaced with a incorrect engine number by a previous owner or builder
I need to know what series of engine numbers this block would have had before August 1975 as I need to show a pre August 1975 engine number to be exempt from emissions testing

If the partial vin and date code from the pad above the timing cover on the passenger side are gone it is likely you'll never find out. I believe that block number was mostly used in later model vehicles so it's more likely to be post 75. I'm not sure on UK rules but how are they going to prove it's pre or post 75 anyway? How that would affect emissions is beyond me but I also don't make the rules. Good luck in your project.

Just doing a little research, which with info this dated I’m sure some of the info could be mistaken, but using the numbers you provided this is what I came up with.

Block: 14015445 – 78 to 90, 2 or 4 bolt mains
Heads: 14081045 – 78 to 87, Open Chamber 454
Intake Manifold – GM 454, Peanut Port Cast Iron, Quadrajet

To nail down the application and horsepower rating you will need to identify the Engine Suffix Code, which is stamped on a block pad located immediately forward of the right hand or passenger side cylinder head. The entire engine code contains the assembly plant, month and day.

While there could have been some swapping going on with an engine this old, if it is original you can sort of narrow it down to at least the years the heads were available.
