ID Engine year- Locating Numbers
ID Engine year- Locating Numbers
Have a Chevy engine, was told it was a 1991 Corvette 350. Cant locate any engine stamped numbers that jive with posted info. The casting on the drivers side rear reads : GM 5.7 L G and SGI under the "GM", passenger side by water pump has a "CC5 110", no other stamps on the block that I can find. Asked my local dealer , they don't have a clue... The "CC5 110" doesn't correspond to crate engine numbers that i could find on the web. The engine has cast iron heads, so that pretty much tells me its not a Corvette, maybe a Camero ?
Any ideas

Take a photo of the stamping on that pad and post it, please.

Which should mean a crate engine. So "Corvette" had a crate engine. No VIN stamping shouldn't be able to be looked up. You'll have to find crate engine stamping codes.

Re: ID Engine year- Locating Numbers
I have read elsewhere that on crate engines that no sure way to identify what they are/were. The stamping is only a partial GM part #. Every factory engine I've ever seen have the date coding as well as partial VIN.
I'd at least remove the valve covers & see what heads.
You're probably going to have to tear ir down to figure out what it really is.

Re: ID Engine year- Locating Numbers
Either that's not a factory GM engine, or the stamp pad has been decked and restamped by an engine shop. The VIN is missing, as well as the plant code, assembly date, and suffix. With that being said, there's no way to tell EXACTLY what it came in originally. You can still look at the casting number and casting date to narrow it down a bit, but the important part (stamp pad) is gone if it is indeed a factory GM engine.
