If You Could Have Any Gen F-body, Which One?

this is just for my own curiousity, if you could have any gen F-body setup anyway from the (key word) factory which would you want? a 1st gen camaro with a 396 or the bird with the ram air 400s? or the 2nd gen with the z-28 396's or the firebirds SD-455 or wicked 6.6 litre? 3rd gen 305 TPI 5-speed or 350 TPI auto? how about the 4th gen LS-1 6speed or what else comes to mind?

As much as I love my IROC, I'd love a 69 Camaro RS/SS. It wouldn't matter what engine it had stock, I'd have to find a way to get 800 or so horsepower in it. Those things just BEG for a lot of HP. I wouldn't sell my IROC though.

Growing up, I always wanted a '69 Camaro. One day I will have one. Personally, I could care less about handling most of the time. I do like the performance of the 4th gens and the looks of the 3rd gens, but nothing beats a 67-69.

70 1/2 Z28, period. Sorry, first gens don't do it for me. Every high school kid on the planet wants one. Oh, sorry, every high school kid on the planet USED to want one. Now they all want Honda Civics.

By the way, that is not a stab at you first gen guys. I can respect the cars. They just are not my cup of tea. Maybe because I grew up a Ford guy, and always hated those cars (probably 'cuz most of them would whip the Mustangs)! Anyway, I suppose if I was forced to have a COPO first gen, then I would humbly accept.

No contest... the 98+ WS6 Trans Ams just look awesome. And they are the only car I know of that looks good with the flip lights up too.

My dream car has and always will be a 1991-1992 Trans Am GTA Convertible, Hunter Green with a Tan top and interior. Sigh. I would even drive a 5 speed again for a chance to own one of those.

Until then, I think the 3rd gens offered the most comfort and space. Besides, it takes almost 8 hours to change plugs on an LT1/LS1, and only 2 with my LB9. And I'm slow!

Until then my 91 will do me just fine!

'73 Trans Am w/455-SD, 4-speed, 4.11 rears, Ram Air III hood with the T/A shaker scoop, white on black interior..... oh what a car. Like MC Hammer says---"Can't touch this"!!!

Had one once, it was my 16th birthday gift from my parents. One month later, took my driving test in it. From that point on, history was made!!! Damn I wish I still had it!

I would have to say '92 Trans Am GTA like 92GTA's, except in any form of red, or else a '92 Firehawk with EVERY option available.

Both are total BEASTS

smokey and the bandit

trans am black with gold striping, no doubt about it, 6.6 liter monster under the hood, CB radio antenna on top and smokey in the rear view...lol

...buy the way i have a lady that is willing to sell a white one (79 in think) 6.6 liter. she has been the only owner and she uses it as a daily driver, still has the original paint on it, i have no idea what condition it is in other than she uses it every day. she is asking $4k for it. I have no idea if that is a reasonable price.....

69 firebird formula 400! Only seen one the way I wanted it though. Dad had the 79 smokey and the bandit car. Black and gold, 6.6, posi, t top, 4 wheel disc etc. I should have bought it , it was a low mile car but he sold it to a friend of mine who trashed it.

for camaros i'd love to have a black 4th gen lt1 (ls1 camaros are ugly...) with a 6 speed. IN terms of firebirds i wouldn't mind having an '89TTA sitting in my driveway....

i've owned a 74 with a 383/400 tranny.. i like old cars, but in the last few years i've appreciated new ones more. ls1 engines are so far ahead of lt1 and l98-older its amazing. first gen camaros are cool, but share too much styling with other muscle cars.. too boxy. second gens are cool.. i dunno, im just a power and performance guy, i want a car that can slam you in the seat, but loves to carve up turns as well. for me, a 2002 SS, or WS6 Ram air would suffice as well

First car I ever bought was a 69 Camaro Pace Car with the 350/300 combo small block. Gave this to my first wife to drive and bought a 70 1/2 Green Z28 with black lace stripes. Also owned 78 Z28, 68 SS Camaro, V8 Vega, 78 Gold Smokey Edition 6.6 TA, 87 GTA and now an 89 TTA.

I've had one from every generation but the 4th and almost bought one 3 weeks ago. Maybe one day so it can sit next to my TTA.

The TTA is my favorite, by far.

Pete

Whats that about an '84!?

If I could have any f-body, I'd go with the '69 Z28. White with blue stripes, cowl hood, 302 with 395hp bone stock (yes, my friends grandpa has one all stock with pea-shooter echaust that got nearly 400 RW ponies on the dyno), black interior, stock ride height. Yes, my dream car. Maybe I'll own one in the future.

395hp bone stock. good i needed a laugh. the 302 rated at 290 and has been proven on a dyno at 320hp. 395hp, you've got to be kidding me.

Although not a big fan of the 2nd gens... the 3rd and 4ths gens are awesome. Great fuel efficient power combined with handling and good looks, they make for great cars. However, if I could have any F-Body it would have to be a nice 69 Z/28.

I too have had a 1st-2nd -3 -third gen cars and currently a 89 GTA. I have a feeling I may be one of the old men on this web site (43 years old) As a teenager I loved big block power and now I like a good ride with cruise, air and CD. However power is still a must. Never meet a rice burner I didn't like leaving behind.I would like to try a 4th gen with a six speed. One thing I will say is as I got alittle older I got smarter. My advise is ask many many questions and learn from peoples mistakes.Sometimes it is better to wait for a factory ride than buy a car to fix yourself.By the time your car runs as good as a stock hot rod you will have more money in it than just buying one. Had a 1970 formula the more I bolted on parts the slower it ran, ( all mismatched stuff) Today I spend more time doing research than the work. Current 89 GTA is in its bay being worked this winter . I am copying what worked for others . Possible super charger next fall after motor is broke in. I LOVE ALL THESE CARS.

I could have purchased any F-body I wanted, but chose the 3rd gen GTA. I like the looks of these the best. I feel they are aerodynamic with out looking too futuristic, the performance is good enough for me, and there is always Mods you can do. The GTA I own now is my third-3rd gen car, and I owned five 2nd gen's. The first gen's are okay, but primitive on options & handling. Although the 4th gen's run like Raped Apes I do not like the way they look. Just my opinion.

I voted for the 1st gen. as I owned a 67 camaro in 1970. 20 years old and fresh out of college. I was going to make an impact on the world or at lest my girl friend, later my wife. I then had a brand new 1975 camaro with a six banger. Kept it until 82 when I bought an 80Z28 and now I have an 83Z28 that I got last year. Many more great memories in the 67 then in the other cars.

well, speaking from experience..

1st gen == I LOVE THEM. My Dad's '68 Camaro RS/SS 396 is a blast to drive (the whole 50 miles in 10 years but fun even still) They get killer looks and TONS of "nice car" waves and stuff

2nd gen == Decent styling. First ones were better, last years were best. Performance blew but they were still a cool car.

3rd gen == Finally!! Good handling but no power I love both of my IROCs, though. KILLER looks, no looks from old papas but who gives a crap, right?

4th gen == Whoa. Where did the handling go?! Ah well, a true domestic muscle car.. ALL GO and no cornering. My friend has a '95Z and i swear it's the fastest car i've EVER been in

just my $0.25

Not kidding, I've seen the dyno sheet. I'm not sure if the emmisions was still on there but there were no aftermarket pieces on the engine. The reason they are rated so low is for insurance also engines back then were not all built the same. For this they had to rate engines way under so even the poorest performing engine would make "290hp."

Again I'm not making this up. I've seen the sheet and the car both, I don't know about engine internals, but I don't see why you would put in a loppy cam before a new intake or other bolt ons.

i'm sure you have seen the dyno sheet, but i'm telling you if it is putting out that much hp it isn't stock. there is no if and's or but's about it. i'm fully aware of the insurance reasons etc. for the cars from the 60's. car's are more than just a hobby for me, which is why i know a bit more about the field than what i hear from a friend of someone. i'm sure his car is nice, but it doesn't have all of the part's on it that came on it from the factory if it's putting out that much hp.

on the voting thing i listed the ZL1, i would say though my second choice would be a 35th anniversary SS.

67-69 ALL THE WAY

As much as I love ThirdGens, especially the 5.7 IROCS, nothing beats a FirstGen. I'd love to have any FirstGen, but i'd really like a 67, 68, or 69 RS/SS. I love the RS package because of the hideaway headlights, and plus it comes with a 396 BB! I like the 67 and 68 because the headlights match the grill, where the 69 hideaways have the 3 strips. All in all, FirstGens beat anything out there.

I have a '70 Camaro, and a pair of thirdgens, so I have to say another '69 will be next to replace the one I sold last year. Can't have too many musclecars.

My dream car has and always will be a 1991-1992 Trans Am GTA Convertible, Hunter Green with a Tan top and interior. Sigh. I would even drive a 5 speed again for a chance to own one of those.
Dang... looks like I just bought your dream car! It's not a GTA, but it's got most of the GTA options, minus the 5.7 of course. Hunter green, tan top, gold GTA rims, leather interior, LB9, WS6, etc. It's even an automatic! I'm not sure they offered a GTA 'vert that year, tho...

As far as the dream f-body goes for me.... '79 6.6, t-tops, white with the blue bird package. Just loove the looks of those cars!

I love the RS package because of the hideaway headlights, and plus it comes with a 396 BB! I like the 67 and 68 because the headlights match the grill, where the 69 hideaways have the 3 strips. All in all, FirstGens beat anything out there.
incorrect not all RS cars are big blocks, in fact it is very RARE to find an RS/SS 396 car.. my Dad has one and he looked for 10 years for one worth restoring

almost all of the RS cars were 307-350 cars, and most of them were automatic

if you want some more info on firstgens you can email my dad at bopseth@pacbell.net i'm sure he'll help you out

later,
Colin

Tough choice. I have owned 2 '69 Camaro's, loved them both... sniff sniff. My dream = a 1969 DZ302 Z/28 Cortez Silver with Black Stripes or a SS/RS 396/375HP, same color scheme, or all black COPO, Yenko, or ZL1. One thing I realize, my dreams = big $$$. I love my IROC and will hopefully never have to part with it. I would like to have a 1992 25th Anniversary Heritage Z/28 with Red w/Black stripes or Black w/Red Stripes. Im not a big fan of 2nd gens, 4th gens, the only one i like is the 1997 SS's.

Just my 2 cents.
