Questions on getting more out of my 305
Hi guys... it's been a while since I posted... I'm at the point where I have decided to do some motor work to my stock 305 in my 84 z28. I was thinking of doing a small cam, new carb, maybe headers and exhaust. I know nothing about cams, but I was told to be careful when choosing the cam. I don't want to go to extreme, but something that will definitely make the car meaner in sound and performance without damaging the motor. Can you guys give me some pointers and advice on which way to go? Some info on carbs, headers and exhausts also. Thank you all.

With a small cam headers and exhaust you might as well just retune the stock carb

headers and exhaust
The way is, find THE BOTTLENECK as it stands RIGHT NOW, and uncork it.
RIGHT NOW, your bottleneck is not the cam. It is not the carb. It is the exhaust system. Kinda like the blue LG4 car with the L69 air cleaner on it once was and/or might still be. (can you tell, I don't put much stock in "looks" or "sound" )
It needs to go. EVERY SINGLE PIECE, from the heads to the street.
Start there. All else is bishop-buffing and will only make your car faster by way of weight reduction centered on the driver's wallet.

Sofa is correct. Upgrading the exhaust on my 84 TA made the biggest difference in performance than any other single upgrade I did.

You're on the right track with exhaust.
Cam, carb, .....as sofa and NoE said above....don't go there yet.
As further proof of what just eliminating the exhaust bottleneck can do (along with some other "non-engine" modifications) for the performance of the car, see my sig for the LG4 configuration.
