Issue: 87 IROCZ "runs out of fuel" 6-7 gallons after complete fill

A year ago I pulled my 1987 IROCZ out of storage.

Car is stock. Replaced the fuel pump about 6 months ago. After the car was running I realized it would act "like it was running out of fuel". I started driving it & kept receipts- every 6-7 gallons it started doing this. We have some hills. On a flat surface I ran it until it shut off. At the pump it only took 10.1 gallons. I know these tanks are about 15.5 gallons.

I took someones advice when replacing the fuel pump. I personally did not want to cut the floor. We removed the exhaust since most of that was new, but it was suggested at the time to just drop the tank. We never dropped the rear. This made it extremely tight, but we removed the pickup & replaced the pump. When reassembling it was tight. We did force things. Now because of this issue we are wondering if the pickup / lines or something got bent in the process of installing the pump.

Has anyone else ever come across this issue; car running out of fuel near 1/2 tank? I have also wondered if the pressure relief valve could cause this? Any advice or suggestions on what may be causing this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to TGO! Post up some pics of your ride sometime.

I would certainly check the tank vent. It is the "UFO" looking thing up under near the tank. Try the easy things first, these are known to be an issue I have read here. I am not certain if running without a gas cap would troubleshoot this but I think it would - of course there is a safety concern in doing so.

You do realize that "brand new" is in NO way any kinds of conclusive proof that the pump is actually perfectly operable , right ? I have over the years seen literally dozens of brand new in the box components that were flat out defective ! Hows the fuel pressure at the rail look when it's doing it's starving for fuel thing ? Also , bow tied is correct , a really simple way to see if the pressure relief valve is at fault is to remove the gas cap and see if it'll run till the bottom of the tank . If both the pressure relief valve AND the evap system were totally blocked it could allow a vacuum to build up in the tank that the pump couldn't overcome . But with the gas cap removed no such vacuum could build up , so if the valve and evap being clogged were the only problem it would run till the fuel actually runs out with the cap removed .....

Another idea is that the sock (strainer) may have fallen off of the new pump and that could be why it won't pump those last 5 or 6 gallons .....
