Gas guzzling beast!
Hey all
I own a Camaro SC 305 V8..
My car seems to eat a lot of gas. I mean more than normal.
Lets say im at half a tank.. and I drive on the highway for no more than lets say 10 min... but I drive thsi one route its about an hour there and back.. with high speeds involved in one part of it. and the rest is up hill and down hill. But lets say im at half. But the time I get home im almost on empty.
Is this normal for a V8? or is my car jsut guzzling way to much gas. Plus my "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on. But nothing is wrong from my understanding so far. I hope its nothing but anyways.. plz reply.

if you're flooring it and it's carbureted you'll be in the 4 barrels all the time so absolutely, you could be getting as low as 12mpg..
one thing, don't EVER go by the gauge, GM gauges are always atleast 1/4 tank out..
here's an example, my '86 IROC has 4.11s, i can fill my tank to the point where it goes "click, click" at the gas pump and drive 100 miles before the gauge even reads at the 'F' line.. 150 more miles to the '1/2' line and then within the next 75 miles it's empty..
i hope you don't think your car uses more gas when the tank is half empty than half full

it all depends on how you drive and what the gearin is like in your car. I get about 14mpg in my car when I behave. if I goof around and race and stuff I get about 8-9mpg. and that's a big difference.

you guys think you have a problem? my car isnt all that fast, runs high 14's low 15's and its a somewhat stock Lg4, and i get all of 8 or 9 miles a gallon, when i drive "normally". When i cruise i get about 11 miles per and when i race around i get about 7. A full tank for me is around 115 miles. I fill up about twice a week, gas around here is $1.23 for premium 91 octane. For an Lg4 i think its bad mileage, but for the times i run i can't complain, most Lg4's from what i hear are dogs.

If the computer crap and the carb are behaving, LG4 gas mileage is suppose to be pretty good (or so i heard....). The problem is it usually isn't. I used to have an formula firebird with an LG4 and my gas mileage was between 12-14MPG, and it was a 5 speed.
